Let the good times roll

Just to even out my bootleg thread, I'd just like to take a step back and acknowledge that this whole DVD thing is really kicking into high gear and it's a great time to be into it. We're all treading new ground together. The amount and quality of movies that come out in general right now [b]is[b] good.
Sure, there's some bad parts here and there, but thankfully they're in the minority. No studios are holding out anymore. Anamorphic isn't voodoo magic to anyone any more. Choices like DTS and others are on the rise. Studios are polling us and letting us take part in forging this market. We make a difference with our vocal concerns. Heck, rumor is even Lucas is bringing out TPM for this coming Christmas.
All in all, it's a great time to be a DVD enthusiast. And remember, it could be worse!

It's natural and even beneficial to complain, but I agree overall things are great. The future is uncertain however. Things will get better with respect to more and more titles coming out. But things may get worse also. Rental windows, the possibility of mainstream adoption leading to p&s, etc.

But then again, from both a good and a bad point of view, I think certain heydays have passed. Dvds used to be a lot cheaper online than they are now, those days are gone and getting worse (I think we can kiss express.com goodbye and dvdplanet has become pretty useless from a price point of view). On the bright side the biggest threat to dvd (divx) is also gone

Overall I just thank God that a) I was into laser discs which means I don't fret nearly so much about movies not on dvd since most of them I have on ld and b) I got a few hundred dvds during when they were a lot cheaper than today.

I agree with everything that's been said, thus far (including being into LD as a great "backup" to DVD).

The only thing that troubles me are advances in DV technology that are NOT backward compatible, like DVD-Audio. I don't like being in a situation where I'm forced to upgrade hardware especially after investing money in the hardware I have now.

Peace....

Surprisingly, I think as DVD becomes more mainstream, the trend seems to be away from P&S. I think double sided discs with P&S and widescreen seem to be becoming rarer and widescreen only seems more prevalent. P&S only discs seem to be a thing of the past (Thank God!).

Actually, dvd is a great medium for educating people about things like widescreen, surround sound, etc. Not only that, but dvd is revitilizing interest in classic movies & film in general. All good things.
