Ordeing online
Inspired from Roger's thread about etailers. Also, I'm taking it here rather than in his thread.
I'm really dumbfounded as to why poeople are so afraid of buying online. To me it seems silly to just hand over your credit card to some waiter/waitress at a restaraunt and then have issues using it securely online. If anybody hacks to get credit card numbers, most likely they're hacking into the database with the numbers. This database has numbers of all customers, including non-online purchases. And while it's possible for someone to intercept non-encrypted information sent online, it's just as possible and much more likely for the restaraunt employee to just write down your info. And if it's secure and encypted, forget about it. The cost and time needed to hack that kind of security isn't used trying to hack credit card numbers. Basically, I just can't comprehend any argument against online purchasing that doesn't apply to general credit card use offline. ------------------ 1138 - DVD File Forum Greeter Ray, when someone asks if you're a god, you say YES! I work with a guy who's credit card number got "stolen" from a local restaurant. Apparently, when he gave his credit card to the waitress/hostess to pay the bill, the card was run TWICE: once in the credit card reader for the fraud and once to actually pay the bill.
Some employees of that restaurant were arrested for being part of a cretidt card fraud ring. My friend's credit card issuer was actually contacted by the Sercet Service regarding this credit card fraud case. Peace.... |

Yup, gotta agree. I feel much safer using my CC online that I do in person. (Not that I worry about it too much then, either.) As long as the page is encrypted, I think it's pretty safe that nobody but the people you're buying from are going to get your number. Of course, what they do with it once they get it is always up for speculation. You have to trust your etailer, I guess.

Also, you're only liable for the first $50 on fradulent credit card pruchases. That's assuming you even have to pay them for some strange reason.

I have a friend who works for an internet security company. In other words he's a hacker who works as an anti-hacker. He once asked me to pick any 'secure' website I wanted. Within 45 minutes he had a partial list of customer names and credit card numbers. It was enough to convince me. And he has lots of horror stories about sites that are compromised that you never hear about. A lot of what his company does is to fix problems and keep their mouths shut.
Of course it's hard to worry about if you've been ordering online with no problems for a long time. But it's kind of like my current medical situation. I'm only 38 and never bothered to get much life insurance. Then when my son (first and only one) turned 4 months old last October I got cancer and only recently ended my chemotherapy. Never thought it could happen to me this young. Now I don't know how much life insurance I'll be able to get. ------------------ dds #070 |

putting your credit card number over the internet is much safer than everyone thinks
when credit cards first came out, people were skeptical about money being on plastic! now everybody accepts that. whenever anything is new, there will always be doubt.. and that's where the doubt is putting your number across the internet is much safer than giving it to a waiter/waitress! they can hack your number whenever! everything on the internet is trackable. if someone does hack your number, and actually uses it, you are not liable for that! the credit card company will pay for it i don't know where the stats are.. but there is much more credit fraud happening everywhere else, and the internet is the lowest. remember, everybody who does anything on the internet gets caught eventually.. they are all trackable |

I actually use a 'debit card' online, not a credit card. It's just like writing a check, but with the convenience of being able to do things like order online. Works just like a credit card except..
I have limited funds available at any given time, and keep track of things well. I call my bank nightly to see what was posted that day, and the minute something funny showed up, I'd just cancel, dispute the charges and get a new card. I feel reasonably safe. Might be an alternative to consider for some of you who are weary about using a credit card, or hate paying interest just to be able to order online...if you set up a checking account and just keep a certain amount in for online purchases, you can't lose much. Mine has no fees at all as long as I use it 5 times each month. Jeff |

I can speek with some experience on that as minw was stolen last year. They accually sat down with me and went over all the pending transactions, and those that I did not make(or remember making) they removed from my ledger and transfered the funds to a new account...
Depending on the bank of course. My mom had the same thing happen to her, and lost about $500us. j ------------------ Co-Moderator Software Forum ~Rather than question the wisdom, question your own lack of understanding!~ My DVD Tracker page |

Well, I'm not alone in my distrust of giving out my credit card over the internet. http://www.cnn.com/2001/TECH/interne....ap/index.html

But once again, they didn't intercept his CC #. They broke into the database that probably had every other CC # too that the company had taken from phone orders and such. It's not a problem of the internet being insecure, it's the company's database that is insecure.

I've ordered from a couple of different online sites and all my purchases have gone well. I don't have a huge credit limit, though, so I'm not too worried, as it would be very easy for me to tell if I've been ripped off.
