Divx Article In The Washington Post

An interesting article in the Washington Post on the last days of Divx. Your's truly is mentioned in it, too.

Silly poster Divx is for kids

It is so funny how some people just will never let something go, even if it is a rotten pile of worthless trash. Every one of my DVDs will be viewable after June 30th.

Now exactly were are those divx recycle bins

I was perturbed by the twice used term "ordinary" in mentioning DVD as opposed to DIVX until I got to the end and they described making formerly exclusive DIVX titles avilable on DVD as "enhancing" them

I picture myself as an old man kind of like WWII resistance fighters sitting around reminscing about the war.

I'll be in the DDS nursing home remembering how we put Dick Sharp in his place and how proud I was that I made CC's enemies list (thanks Snark )

Ed Wood was on divx.

There is no reason not to have a DVD then. Bastards.

But you no doubt paid a lot more than 75 cents each for them? Besides, the fact that my Polish Wedding disc won't be viewable in a couple of months has gotta be a plus.

Hmm - I think that's a rare one. Too bad Buena Vista is fixated on new releases - EW sounds like something I'd like on DVD.

It puzzles me - why isn't there the same fierce hostility to the new HDTV copy protection schemes that the MPAA is pushing. Even the one-time firebrand Steve Tannehill seems to have given up on this issue.

I'm pretty sure I have the list on my old computer. I'll try to find out tonight and post it if I do.

BTW, it's not a porn name although the girls who've seen me naked often ask the same thing.

i really don't understand how anyone could be championing divx now. i mean, it's one thing to be gung ho about it when it looks as if it's going to be the dominating technology. there's some logic in saying, "this is what there is, let's just go with it till something better comes along." but something better has come along!

and i understand the slow rate of catalogue titles showing up on dvd, but i don't see how that affects these companies. how is putting Ed Wood on DVD any more risky than putting Carrot Top's Chairman of the Board on disc?

All I'm saying...don't go there without a can of Raid and a blow-torch.Anyway. Don't attach any special meaning to the position as far as your number, they were apparently selected at random. On the other hand,if by chance you find yourself in the top ten,buy yourself a bottle of bleu-cheese schnapps and a can of turtle-wax,and go to town.Snark.

I just went through Joe's forum for the first time in a while (sorry I haven't visited more often, Joe, you know how it is).

Hands down one of the funniest threads I ever read was poor li'l Henry M**** complaining that, since divx was dead, and he doesn't see any advantage to DVD, he was contemplating going back to VHS. Then he had the audacity to call the people who ran THIS board's predecessor "anti-technology Luddites" for not embracing divx. Apparently, analog VHS is a better technology than DVD UNLESS the disc is a divx disc. How dopey can one man be?

I also liked how he never gave netflix any props. I mean, he constantly praised the convenience factor of divx. What is more convenient than having somebody actually SEND you the discs in the mail, and you can just slap a return label on it? Hell you don't even need to put on pants for that!

As far as I was concerned, the only advantage to divx was the fact that you could have the discs any time, and the rental period would start only when you were ready. But the disadvantages far outweighed the advantages: waste of resources, lack of features, hardly any widescreen and no anamporphic widescreen (for someone concerned with forward technology, why didn't M**** care that his divx discs would look even shittier on a new widescreen TV one day? And that anamorphic DVDs wouldn't? Isn't a forward-thinking technology one that prevents its own obsolescence), an untested customer service department, the threat of exclusives, the lack of studio support across the board, the inability to bring silvered discs to other players, the lack of silverable discs...*I* could never see an advantage to it. And apparently only a few saw the advantage it had as reason enough to buy, Henry included. But to then say "back to VHS for me?" Have I mentioned that I think Henry is dopey?

I wonder how Henry feels now that many DVD players are under $200, and many discs are under 15 dollars, and many stores now rent DVDs, and netflix gives you unlimited rentals & availability for what amounts to a monthly fee...wait a minute, no I don't wonder. Because Henry is dopey!

Ah, yes, Henry - the guy we couldn't help but picture in a Cirtcuit City shirt saying, "Can I please sell you an extended warranty with that DIVX player?"

Come to think of it, probably a great many customer's extended warranties lasted longer than DIVX did.

Ah Henry! My arch-nemesis, always brought a smile to my face, remember when he gave me the ultimate set-up, by saying "I wonder when someone will come out with a combo DIVX, LASERDISC, DVD player?"

Leaving me open to post:"Sure they will Henry, right after they come out with an electronic walrus polisher."

You live for those kind of moments.

Joe,did that make you laugh as hard as when I told you Henry had already "weighed in?"

As for Deep Throat's identity, I did reveal his name shortly after DV Express closed their doors, but he got upset with me, saying that he didn't want to burn any bridges, and that he might have to work with some of these guys again.

I have to admit he was right, you never know who you might come across in this buisness, however, you might be able to find that post somewhere......I remember the Rock making a comment about how it was cool to know the guy's name, of course he's pretty busy, what with being the Scorpion King and all.

For the record, Henry has stated that if he had to make the choice between DVD-only or Divx-only, he'd choose the former.

Back then, in the pre-Marquee days, Netflix was expensive, costing up to $7 a rental, and you only got a week to watch the discs before you had to send them back.

Because the discs were throwaways, which could be replaced for the same price as Blockbuster rentals, and anyways, he (and most other Americans) were not going to be getting widescreen TVs at any time in the foreseeable future. This brings up an interesting point: with the MPAA doing its best to derail HDTV and the 16x9 format with their copy-protection schemes, something that affects everyone, especially those who subscribe to cable TV, where is the outrage that Divx inspired? Even the one-time firebrand Steve Tannehill appears to be meekly accepting the Firewire-based copy protection schemes as inevitable...go figure!

Pioneer was the name in laserdisc players, and they were planning on putting Divx-compatible players on the market, so the notion of a DVD/Divx/LD combo player wouldn't have been farfetched at all.

Uh...was this revelation made BEFORE or AFTER he started this thread?

http://pub1.ezboard.com/fdigitaldisc...picID=11.topic

Hope the link works, but if not, it's a thread he started called "VHS not looking so bad."

Maybe he wised up and changed his mind after writing such an asinine thread. Either that, or he's simply a f-ing hyprocrite.

Any assistance you can make in clarifying this quagmire would be swell.

I remember that thread! Especially the line, This is like going into a Playstation forum and talking about how Playstation sucks!

Anyway, I skipped to the very end to see how recent it was and notice a comment looking forward to DVD having 4 million players sold. Is Henry still around? Has his opinion changed now that over 15 million players have been sold?

Seeing as how Henry isn't here to defend himself Someone has to!
I think, he like us, just liked the convenience of the format and in trying to debate some topics, got so far off that they turned more into judgements than anything.
I think the guy felt like we did at the time. He like the convenience of Divx and was surprised when he came online and found the anti divx backlash and tried to defend it. He always said he preferred DVD and he tried Netflix and liked it but it still wasn't as convenient.
RD actually went from being ANTI-DIVX to pro Divx, He's the Traitor!!! LOL
Just kidding RD.

Sorry, Joe, but that doesn't wash. If he liked DVD that much, he never would've started such a ridiculous thread.

In fact, if you take that e-trip down memory lane he was PRAISING VHS and Pro-logic sound at the front of it. He said he never would've bought a DVD player were it NOT for divx. He said his player would now be "gathering dust." He said he didn't think the picture from a DVD player was noticeably better using a straight coax or RCA plug connection. He said a lot of very stupid things.

Henry knew he was setting himself up for a flame war, as he did MANY times before on other forums. He knew what he was doing, and IMHO, does not deserve your defense.

I really don't mean to keep bringing up the past, but let's face it, it WAS funny! And also, if you're going to defend his words on this topic, you should be prepared to defend ALL his words.

If the beginning of that thread was the first thing any real DVD fan-or divx for that matter-read from Senor M****, they would think he was a total retard. And I'm sure that also holds true for many forum vets, too.

As the young kids say, peace out, yo.

Well I never read ALL his work.
But from what I gathered from the conversations I had with him that is what I got from it.

Edit:
Ok I re-read that thread. I would bet if you asked him today his feelings may be different. DVD is much cheaper for purchase and rentals have become more available.
He just isn't the Home Theater afficianado that we all are.
