Pricing Weirdness

Hiya.

I live in Canada, just so you know what side of this I'm coming from. Anyway, it seems odd to me that some DVDs are substantially cheaper here. Not that I'm complaining, mind you. It's not all of them, but let me give you an example or two:

The one that really made me notice were the X-Files Season box sets. The cheapest places online I could find in the US for the third one were around $107 US, which is about $170 Canadian. On the other hand, the cheapest place in Canada online to get it is $114 Canadian, which is like $72 US. In other words, it's approximately $35 US cheaper in Canada.

This isn't an isolated thing, either. I paid $24 Canadian ($15 US) for my limited 2-disc Manhunter and $29 Canadian ($19 US) for my limited 2-disc Halloween. There's lots of other examples too, those are just off the top of my brain.

Is it just me or does that seem a little weird? Again, I'm not complaining since I can't afford to pay more, lol, maybe they know that or something, but still, it seems odd that we have similar list prices on a lot of product and get similar discounted prices, but we wind up paying less because our dollar is worth less.

It's hard to tell, that incredibly good price might be some kind of anomaly, which is fancy way of saying it could be a fuck-up. Dioes this store traditionally offer such low prices on their product? Maybe it's a loss-leader, maybe there's a Candaian pressing plant close enough to warrant a lower price, because there's less shipping onvolved, maybe they just screwed up.

If this happens consistently, then I'd say maybe something is up.

There's a B&M store near me where I found the NIghtmare on Elm Street box set for $72. I think the MSRP is around $130. They're selling the X-Files 3rd season for $110. When that happens, just take advantage, who knows when it'll happen again.

It's like this everywhere. My Bond series 2 set cost me $99 Canadian, that's like $63 US, and that was at a store here in town. I believe MSRP on Body Double, Canadian, is $19.99, I paid $14.99 which is US list I think, only in Canadian dollars, (plus the guy at Blockbuster gave me 20% off), so it was like $7.99 US.

Check out these sites if you don't believe me, and convert the prices you see there into US dollars from Canadian. As I said, it's not everything, but it's kind of interesting to see. I believe most Canadian releases are pressed here, so that would explain some of it, but it's kind of odd, just the same. Again, not that I'm complaining. Just odd.
