Do we get too worked up about DVD releases?
I'm not sure where this should go, so I'm starting in this forum!
![]() When some new DVD releases are announced, message boards on different sites come to life as people talk about teh announcement and speculate about the release and later comment on the actual release content. Then the DVD comes out and two weeks later no one says anything about that movie again, unless we're talking about "best of" lists or making recommendations to "newbies" or something. I wonder why we get so excited about any given movie being released on DVD. Let's take Star Wars as an example. DVD File has a separate FORUM DEDICATED to Star Wars DVD discussion. What will happen to this forum when all of the Star Wars movies are out on DVD? (let's assume they will ALL come out to keep this simple, ok? )There is a TON of discussion going on about Star Wars and when it's finally out, I doubt we will continue to talk about it much. There has NOT been much Fight Club discussion in months. There has NOT been much Jurassic Park discussion outside of the Dolby Digital vs dts battle and the "Jurassic Park DVD lacks LFE info" stuff...... Outside of these technical issues, there really hasn't been much casual talk about these DVDs. I'm not trying to make any special point outside of "vocalize" (electronically... if you pout your ear close to your screen, you can hear me say what you're reading... ) this recent observation of mine.I do just as much of what I observe as anybody else and I don't know why. I could barely wait for Independence Day to be released on DVD and now that I have it, I rarely watch it. Weird....... Any thoughts?????? Peace..... ------------------ My DVD Profiler List |

Greedy consumerism.
![]() ------------------ 1138 - DVD File Forum Greeter I did have a test today. That wasn't bullshit. It's on European socialism. I mean, really, what's the point? I'm not European, I don't plan on being European, so who gives a crap if they're socialists? They could be fascist anarchists. That still wouldn't change the fact that I don't own a car. |

I have to agree with both your points, as I love the tingling sensation (not of sexual nature, mind you) I get from ordering a DVD. But I have yet to see some DVDs that I've bought, one even at the end of August last year (Le Grand Bleu). And it's not because I have a collection of hundreds of DVDs (I own a grand total of 75, I haven't seen many of these DVDs more than once, 7-8 of which I haven't seen at all (on DVD)). It seems that I am content in owning these titles, without even having put them in my player. With some "limited" edition titles I feel like I need to pick this title up day one, or I will miss out on it for all time to come. Maybe I need to convince myself that some titles just will have to wait, and some are worth waiting for, SW nonetheless. Speaking of SW, now there is a title that I most definitely will preorder.
ps. This sounds like a Soapbox topic ![]() ------------------ "We can't stop here. This is Bat Country!" [This message has been edited by FiveInches (edited 05-17-2001).] |

A new release comes out and most of us are excited.
It may be talked about for a short while, then it fades into the distance. Something new is released and the cycle starts all over again. This is nothing new - look at music and books for example. With few exceptions do I ever see a previously released DVD discussed at length and that is usually to compare it with a newer disc and its features (or lack thereof). I have around 1200 DVD's and 350 LD's. I can't possibly watch them all but it's nice to know that when I want to see Hitchcock's Lifeboat I can drag out the LD and do so; or Re-Animator; or The Fight Club; or Song Of The South. Once in a great while I'll watch a superb film, such as The Third Man, and be prompted to leave a post about it, but this is rare. |

I've commented along thse lines in other threads, mostly when people get psyched when they get something before the official street date.
I do look forward to hearing people's opinions about new releases, to make sure something I might be on the fence about is worth the money. But I don't think I'll ever understand the thrill of getting something first. BTW, I went through my DVD cllection earlier today, and have 92 DVDs I've yet to watch. This includes all the 3rd season of X-Files, and some other releases that just came today (2 days after the release date! I'm such a LOSER! To quote Charlie Brown: AAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!) ![]() |

I think I have about 20 I haven't watched yet of my 440 or so. This is an interesting point though. I know there's a lot of things I've been really excited about that after I've gotten them I've only watched them once or so.
I have 15 or so I watch a lot, and probably another 20 or so I watch fairly frequently. The others I watch less frequently. Some just sit and gather dust til the mood catches me I guess, if it ever does again. I think I probably get too worked up over new releases, sometimes I feel panicky if I can't get something new immediately, like I'm getting right now over the new X-Files box set. *cry* But then a month or so later, in most cases, I'm not so desperate anymore except for the stuff I really want, like the X-Files set, etc. Anyway, those are my thoughts, meager though they may be. ------------------ Lucretia setsuna@sk.sympatico.ca My Collection It shakes me!
