DIVX-format for music!
I figured any analogy to DIVX would be welcome here.
Check this out: http://www.cnn.com/2001/TECH/interne....ap/index.html I'm taking bets on how long it takes before these "timeline points" are reached A) No one joins B) The restrictions are cracked, thereby allowing unlimited (ergo, unlicensed) usage of the song C) Everyone joins with a "cracker" and finally one of two end-games D.1) A cold war between programmers and hackers ensues. D.2) The services are halted. Any comments? |

Believe it or not, there are people online that feel guilty about downloading music from Napster or Morpheus or WinMX 2.6. A client of mine has a subscription to Emusic because she can't stomach the guilt of copyright theft. This new service from RealNetworks may work, but it'll depend upon the content offered and how flush/varied it is, sound quality of the files and the restrictions placed upon secondary usage (i.e., being able to burn files to CD-R or upload into MP3 players). ------------------ ..:: Eye | Moderator | eye@dvdfile.com |

It sounds like there is no secondary usage... it is basicly the music equivalent of VOD. You select what you want to listen to and it get's streamed to your computer.
I don't see this taking off, because it is not downloadable, and requires your computer to be activly connected to the internet, and the quality probably isn't going to be that great (streaming media can only get so large before you run into problems) I would hate to see the monthly bills that Real is going to incurr from their internet connections Streaming media can add up to a lot of network throughput real quick ![]() Rentable, low quality music? No thanks, I'll pass... Chromy |

The reason I'm sticking to mp3 for now is that I don't want to buy the album twice (CD, then DVD-Audio). I'll wait for DVD-A and buy the CD only when I really "need" it.
Or I will buy second hand. I did use Napster awhile last year but I feel that it is substandard to what I want. I encode my mp3s at 256kbps (a compromise between quality and size) and I only use them on my computer. Hence it's not a listening experience, but a way for me to listen to music while working, chatting or posting replies in this forum. ![]() ------------------ "We can't stop here.
