Yet another useless topic... sigh!

I must say that I am angered by the amount of topics that is just plain useless like:

"Don't you just hate those small Canadian rating stickers"

or

"My keepcases are misaligned with my snapcases"

or

"The antitheft device on my latest DVD is black and not white"

I'm not trying to offend anyone that thinks this way, but why bother posting these topics at all? Who benefits from reading these topics?

Topics with a valid point or voicing opinions are warmly welcome, but please spare me from the ones described above!

(I know, I don't have to read them if I don't want to.)

That's exactly why we have topic titles. Read what's interesting to you, ignore the rest.

At least I had the decency to tell you right off

And this is the Soapbox, where this kind of topic should be posted, right?

Maybe there should be a Litterbox section where all the nagging and complaining about matters that can be considered, well, eccentric, can be posted. (This one included)

The soapbox or Off-Topic forums are perfect for these kinds of post. No need for a new forum.

no, i agree there should be a special nit-pickers' forum. for the people who really want to get into the annoying technical arguments or gripe about wrinkled insert pages or whatever. there are some people who get way too opinionated about these things...

Fiveinches,

I think you are in the minority on this one.

Last time I checked, this was a forum board in which people can post topics in various catagories.

If you don't like a topic, don't read it.

I am posting here just to vent a little...

When are people gonna stop complaining about the anti-theft devices/packaging? (I realise the answer is 'never' but it's a rhetorical question)

I have never had any trouble opening my DVDs, and I own over 300. Also, I work in a store, and I am glad to have those stickers on there. You wouldn't believe how many people try to steal even an empty case.

Anyway, I'm done ranting. You can blame this letter in "reader mail" for this outburst. (My interjections are in brackets)

Dear DVDFILE

In the past, you've taken up the Good Fight for many things DVD: Anamorphic encoding, the death of DIVX, and so forth. You've got the ear of the industry. I'd like to suggest a new crusade: an end to the Adult-Proof DVD Wrapper.

That's what I call the recent trend to package a DVD in so much plastic and so many stickers that it takes minutes, not seconds, to open it. Trying to remove the wrap without some sharp implement is all but impossible. Even worse are the labels. The top-of-the-case label was bad enough, with its easy-tear design. I could understand the desire to show that the DVD case had never been opened, and I appreciate having the name of the movie on the top when I'm buying the film. Still... often, when I try to remove that label from a keepcase, I end up putting a hole in the clear cover of the case from where I try to peel up the corner of the label. [Best way to do it is to slide a hobby knife along the groove, then remove the two pieces of the sticker separately.]

Now, in addition to the top label, many DVDs have big "SECURITY DEVICE ENCLOSED" labels on the other two "seamed" sides. More often than not, there are actually two labels, stuck one on top of the other, in each spot.
These even get stuck directly to Snapper cases, where removal usually rips the cardboard body of the case. [Honestly, I do not understand how anyone can rip their packaging with these stickers. The "side and top" ones are the most cardboard friendly stickers I have ever seen.] The sadist that came up with these labels even put little crosscuts in the edges, to guarantee that the labels cannot be removed in one piece. [Well, that's kind of the idea...it is an anti theft device, after all.]

Meanwhile, these peeled off super sticky labels are sticking to everything...[Maybe you should place them in the trash, which is where they belong.] This is absolutely moronic. I hate the studios that have gone to this scheme. They're wasting my time. [Because those 60 seconds spent unwrapping a DVD could be put to better use, such as saving the dolphins, putting an end to apartheid, or rescuing cats from out of tall trees.] If the internal radio tag and the shrink-wrap and the top-of-the-case label aren't enough to keep the product from being stolen... maybe the retailer needs to rethink their security? Is there really that big a DVD shoplifting problem? [Yes, there is. Do you think that security devices are just there for fun? You've caught on to the secret now, there is no shoplifting going on at all, it's all part of a great big insurance fraud scheme.] Are clerks really unable to tell that a returned DVD has had the shrink-wrap removed, and they need three more labels to be removed before they get the idea? [Actually, as far as I'm aware, it has nothing to do with that.]

This DVD overpackaging is not only wasteful, unnecessarily costly, and environmentally hostile, [Would you be happier if the DVD packaging was made entirely out of recycled paper? Then you'd complain about how crappy they look.] it's just plain consumer unfriendly. Please, use your considerable clout: urge the studios to make their packages in an Easy Open edition! [Please don't. There are plenty of other causes that would be time better spent than this.]

I routinely peel off the security stickers in one piece. I didn't know that was an issue. Also, one other thing I always do is I stick it to the inside of the Best Buy bag so that it doesn't "stick to everything".

As long as movies are still OAR on DVD, then I can handle the stickers, although I could do with the ones on the SIDES and BOTTOM.

The only time I hate those anti-theft stickers is when I open a new movie and find them stuck to the top of the friggin' disc. Does a person stick these things in the cases or a machine?

In response to Damian's last post here, I actually found the anit-theft stickers stuck to my copy of the Revenge of the Nerds 2-Pack.
I took it back and actually stood to the side of the returns counter (while letting other customers get helped) while I went through 4 more copies until I found one that was ok.
It's gotta be a machine that puts them in the packaging... either that or one pissed off line worker at a packaging house.
