DTS vs DD

The original debate was posted elsewhere but the thread got a little off track. Just interested in other opinions.

I compaired the DTS and DD version of Jurassic Park and I am now a DTS convert. I'm selling all my DD discs if they have DTS versions. During the T-Rex attack scene the DD version had a really nasty compression problem with the high end. The DTS version had no distortion at all. DTS is also mastered at about 5 dB higher than DD. The bass is a little heavier with DD but you can compensate for DTS with the bass settings on your receiver. I didn't hear too much difference spacially but the compression problem was enough to convert me. I forget the numbers, but DTS is also given more bandwidth.

What are you talking about? EVERYBODY knows that Dolby Stereo Surround is *THE* audio format of choice, by definition.....

(Just kidding)

Gee, you ask a silly question....

While I think the general concensus is that DTS is better than DD, I don't know that I'd go out of my way to sell all my DD DVDs with DTS counterparts. I mean, DD isn't THAT bad.

In all seriousness, I've basically been a dts fan ever since I first encountered dts in the theaters.

I tend to buy dts versions of DVDs, but I'm still VERY happy with the DD version of various movies.

About the only thing I really miss with any DD 5.1 DVD is the lack of Dolby Digital intro/fanfare that I get a LOT on my AC-3 LDs.

Peace.....

I prefer DTS, much better bass. More surround sound seperation. Overall much better in my opinion.

What I'd like to know, out of all the LD Jurrasic Park VS DVD Jurassic Park is:

- is the picture quality better on the LD than the DVD?

Quote:
the lack of bass on these particular DVDs in not a bass management issue [referring to the JP DD & DTS DVDs]
Doh! Obi over at HTF would be fuming if he read this.

I would say no. I have the JP dts LD and the JP dts DVD and I think the picture on the DVD is better. I *still* do not have a subwoofer, so I can't speak for the bass part.

Would it matter to someone (like me) that doesn't have a surround sound system hooked up? Or should I just ignore the DTS and DD options when watching a DVD through only my TV speakers?
I suppose I could compare the audio on some of my discs that have both sound options available, but I am lazy.

Also, if I am watching a movie while my player is hooked up to 2 seperate speakers (for 2.0 surround), and the discs audio preferences are set to 5.1 , am I missing any audio channels? It never sounds like I am, but I just want to be sure. I am sorry if I am going too off topic.

IF you don't have 5.1, then DTS is useless to you. DD can downmix a 5.1 mix into a stereo mix. DTS doesn't have this option which is why they always have a DD 2.0 or PCM track.
