please read this.

why oh why did they shut down my thread? it was going so well. I hope this gets twice as many hits.

I was talking to my friend that i hadn't seen in a while, and i told him that i was thinking about getting a dvd player. he then went on a tirade about people who own dvds. he made some rather good points.

First, he said that the people who buy dvds are the kids who were into video and computer games as a child and some who are still. He said dvds are just another toy for adults who are stuck in childhood.
Second, he said people buy dvds to show off to their friends, whether they have any friends or not. according to him, people buy the huge fancy systems and tons of movies in the hope to show them off to people. when actually no one really cares about their toy.
He then said these people must be obsessive compulsive to worry about the picture quality and the sound and all that.
I agree somewhat, but i still believe people buy them for the fact that they love movies. what do you think?

Just had to sign up and respond to this
First, I still am in computer games and movies. And yes, I am an adult stuck in my childhood
Second, I don't buy DVD's to show off to my friends, don't have any. I buy them because I like to watch movies.

And how can you show of your collection to your friends if you don't have any And people buy an HT for various reasons, a main reason would be to experience the movie going feeling right at your own home(theater).

while i agree there are some people who are only into DVD because it's the "hot" new toy to have, i think that above all, people are buying them because they are a better way to watch movies.

with dvd, you get to see the WHOLE film, not the pan&scan version. you also get a print that is much better looking than the usual VHS print (example: i didn't know Monty Python and the Holy Grail was in color until i saw it on DVD). I guess these things might not matter to people who don't really care about movies, but most people who don't care about movies don't have a DVD player.

of course, there is a "toy" factor to DVD. and yes, its popularity runs along the same lines as the popularity of computer games, etc. but honestly, it's just a better way to watch movies.

if you want the movies you watch to look better, sound better, and have more artistic integrity, buy a DVD player.

if your friend doesn't like dvd, then i guess he should just stick to very highly shitty.

and your post was most likely closed because it was considered trolling.

I agree with sarawati, right now DVD has become the hot new toy so people are buying while thinking that way.

I did not go into DVD for that however. I am a movie lover, and the quality and value that has been shown thus far made the DVD investment a no brainer for me. The new format also offers a new reason for more obscure films to finally found their way to home video.

I have no real home theater to show off, so that is not an issue. Also, most of my movie watching diet consist of an eclectic mix of cult and art films. My family looks at my collection with blank stares, so I doubt that anyone else would be particularly impressed by what I got, unless they happen to share my same taste.

So while many people are buying into DVD because of the wow factor, I think core group of consumers buy because they really love movies--purchasing VHS is showing hate for the art of film.

Cool topic, Glor316.

Since this topic will probably diverge into mostly opinion not related to one particular DVD title, I'll move it to the SoapBox forum where everyone can add their 2 cents.

First of all, welcome to the forum, sc

Second of all, between the "Steven Segal" thread and this "You guys are all Obsessive-compulsive losers" thread, isn't it clear to all of you what Troll316 is doing? Come on, I know you're smarter than that.

i see your point mani, but this question wasn't really asked in an antagonistic way. so i figure i'll answer the core of his question, and if he gets come-backy, then i'll start ignoring him. there's no reason to not evangelize the non-believers out there...

Hmm..... interesting.... I guess it couldn't be because I like watching movies with movie theater-like sounds and video such that I don't have to put up with the movie theater crap (like lines, cramped seating space, finding a good seat, "down in front" syndrome).....

Oh well, I guess your friend won't be coming to MY house to watch any movies!

Peace....

saraswati,

I'm kind of notorious for reading between the lines, but here's how I see it...

Did anyone here really think the "My action star can kick your action star's ass" direction was going "well?" That was a thread designed to see who would be stupid enough, in Troll's eyes, to take it seriously...and I'm sad to see so many people take the bait.

Quote:

So he's going on a thread for DVD enthusiasts to talk about what assholes we are, which is like going to a Friend of Bill chat room and talk about the smooth rich taste of Corona light. But he couches the insult by creating a "friend" who made these "rather good...points." Apparently, his friend is a 6-foot tall invisible rabbit, and all his points were verified by Alan Smithee & Keyser Soze, but he's relying on the relative politeness of the people on this forum to NOT call him on it. Well, I am.

So which is it, Mildred? Do you agree that we're all a bunch of jackoffs wasting our money and time to try to impress friends we don't have, or do we want the best bang for our movie dollar? Way to sit on the fence, especially since trolls are known for sitting under bridges.

Take it from someone who usually tries, doggedly, to be a devil's advocate and see all sides to an argument or a debate, this guy's a f-in' troll, don't fall for the faux-politeness of it all. I (and Eye, for that homonymnic matter) can see through this guy like Superman at a wet t-shirt contest. Y'all can feel free to respond to his threads, just know that he's flicking his boogers in your general direction, laughing his ass off at how you take his posts seriously.

My question is who cares if he does?

Wasting his time trying to rile people his "friend" calls immature and friendless (implying, rather foolishly "loseresque"), is probably the most stupid thing I've ever heard. Let him go on with it.

It clearly shows...

A) A childishness that exceedes anyone I've ever encountered at DVD File.

B) A woeful excess of spare time...presumeably due to a "friendless" status.

If he's laughing, its only to distract himself from the pathetic existance he's carved out for himself that ends when a self-placed .45 slug crashes through his temporal plate...

At least that's what my friend says.

He makes a couple of good points, n'est ce pa?

Mani, you're absolutely right. I see through this bullplop too. He's just trying to get people pissed off at him so they'll pay attention. It's just like what my 7 year old brother does when I'm ignoring him; he'll get in my face until I tell him to fuck off, because he wants attention any way he can get it.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have better things to do.

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words - "mank" and "ind". What do these words mean ? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

Thanks manigrasso for pulling the shitty troll from out under the bridge.

By the by, I'll admit I can be a bit verbally abusive when I feel it's necessary, but I don't recall ANYBODY being threatened on this thread. Troll316, if you're gonna get your panties in a bunch, at least back it up with some evidence, like I did with you.

I just wanted to jump in and say that some people actually envy those of us who have passionate interests in something. We are the fortunate ones! We have something to look forward to. Most people lead lives of routine and tedium. For us on this board, DVDs add a great deal to our lives. Yes, we love movies. Yes, we enjoy the technology. We are the lucky ones.
