Do any of you actually buy DVD's from Barnes and Noble?
I have this thread going at another forum and so far I'm not surprised by what I hear. Barnes and Noble has a pretty decent selection of foreign, Criterion and Documentary titles, but their prices are absolutely top MSRP, with only a handful of new releases discounted for a month or so. I prefer to travel 50 miles to Borders, which now routinely discounts DVD's by 20-25%, or go on line. The B&N attitude is perplexing. An email reply to my complaint about prices got a response along the lines of "We price our DVD's for retail consumers" or something. The clerks are no more helpful...in fact, they are downright defensive. "We sell hundreds of DVD's every month at these prices" was one response, to which I had to answer, "No doubt, but you would also sell twice, maybe three or four times that if you offered a competetive discount." I explained that I buy up to ten DVD's monthly, and B&N only gets about 5% of my business due to their pricing policy. I do not buy from Suncoast or Sam Goody for the same reason. I plan to print and mail all responses to this thread to B&N, for whatever good that will do, so I'd appreciate all opinions, like-minded or not.
Thanks. |

Our Barnes and Noble doesn't even sell DVDs.

So they price their DVDs too high, does it really matter all that much? I am sure that every title that they sell, is available elsewhere.
I visit my local Barnes and Noble often to get a magazine, or book, and do sometimes look around in their video section. I too, have noticed that their DVD prices are very high compared to other stores. For that reason, I simply don't buy videos or CDs from them. Have you also noticed that they sell coffee for up to $4, or small scones, or individual cookies for about $1.50 each? They must be selling well though because their bakery/coffee shop area has remained open all this time. This is a cause hardly worth fighting for. If a (large) business is over charging, and that makes you angry, why are you concerned with helping their business by persuading them to lower prices? Like I said above, all of their titles are available elsewhere, so simply buy elsewhere. /quote:The clerks are no more helpful...in fact, they are downright defensive.:quote/ Please, please do not complain to the people at the register about this they could care less. I always hate it when customers complain about things like prices to clerks, they have no control over the issue, they are only employed there under 100s of other positions in the company. I am sure the clerks hate it more. I think that you should just stop going to Barnes and Noble and forget about it. Buy from somewhere else that cares more about their customers. It is their own business, they can charge however much they please. |

The web based music CD and DVD catalog is really not their main line of business. Books are their heart and soul. They also have a CD and limited DVD selection in some of their larger stores as well as online because they feel that they have to compete with Amazon. That's pretty much the only reason they've got CD's and DVD's.

I ordered The Spy Who Shagged me off their web site when it first came out. They were selling it for like $10.00 back then but it took almost a month to get it.
I haven't ordered with them since. ------------------ "They're us....we're them!" -Damian |
