DirecTV and AC-3

I'll be moving and the cable system is DirecTV...I thought "GREAT", but I was just curious as to this:

Does it broadcast in AC-3 and are the movies widescreen...

If not, no big deal, I have plenty of DVD's to keep me company, but this would be nice.

Let me know...

Yes, I believe some of the pay movies are in widescreen and are also AC-3. I seem to remember them having a channel set up that just previewed chunks of movies that demonstrated AC-3. Not sure what happened to this or if it is still there since everythings a little confusing still from the Direct TV and USSB merger. I'll check it out whenI get home.

They generally have one pay-per-view movie per week in letterbox 5.1. Most of the rest are generally standard format, with a few occasional surprises. They have the advertising channel that does previews of movies, and the previews are 5.1. STARZ and Encore mention they have plans for 5.1, but I can't find anything that identifies them if they do have them.

I have toyed with buying the new receiver to have access to the 5.1 sound but have always stopped, knowing that, at best, I would use it once a week. Presently, I rarely use the DirecTV movies because of lack of letterbox and 5.1. It might be a feature for the future, but right now not much is there.

I'm also curious about the sound quality. I do believe that in Dolby Surround movies the sound is bass shy. I wonder if the .1 resolves that issue.

I've never seen anything in the program guide onscreen say DD. Do you mean that program guide or the printed guide? About how many movies are DD?
