DirecTV and AC-3
I'll be moving and the cable system is DirecTV...I thought "GREAT", but I was just curious as to this:
Does it broadcast in AC-3 and are the movies widescreen... If not, no big deal, I have plenty of DVD's to keep me company, but this would be nice. Let me know... |

Yes, I believe some of the pay movies are in widescreen and are also AC-3. I seem to remember them having a channel set up that just previewed chunks of movies that demonstrated AC-3. Not sure what happened to this or if it is still there since everythings a little confusing still from the Direct TV and USSB merger. I'll check it out whenI get home.

They generally have one pay-per-view movie per week in letterbox 5.1. Most of the rest are generally standard format, with a few occasional surprises. They have the advertising channel that does previews of movies, and the previews are 5.1. STARZ and Encore mention they have plans for 5.1, but I can't find anything that identifies them if they do have them.
I have toyed with buying the new receiver to have access to the 5.1 sound but have always stopped, knowing that, at best, I would use it once a week. Presently, I rarely use the DirecTV movies because of lack of letterbox and 5.1. It might be a feature for the future, but right now not much is there. I'm also curious about the sound quality. I do believe that in Dolby Surround movies the sound is bass shy. I wonder if the .1 resolves that issue. [This message has been edited by Terry (edited 08-05-1999).] |
