16:9 enhancements in 4:3 televisions

Sony now has two televisions, the KV-32XBR250 and the KV-36XBR250, which offer a "vertical compression" feature that allows DVD users to see the full resolution of 16:9 enhanced discs on the 4:3 television.

Here is the explanation from SONY:

"V-Compression (XBRŽ models) maximizes picture quality on "anamorphic"
widescreen sources, including selected DVDs thus increasing picture
resolution by 33%."

Hopefully more TV vendors will pickup this feature so we can drive home the importance of 16:9 enhancements TODAY, rather than tommorow.

Yes, I hope others catch on. What's *really* annoying is that my Mitsubshi HD-Ready TV *has* a veritcal compression mode. You can see it if you go into the service menu and press "2". However, the service screen has text on it, and I haven't been able to find a way to keep that setting when you exit the service menu.

James,

I believe that all new TVs should come with this feature, and that many, if not most of the upcoming SDTV 4:3 displays will have a 16:9 mode built-in.

The new Chinese Konka TVs also have this feature.

The elecronics circuitry cost for this capability is tiny.

I'm sure that the reluctance to integrate it into TVs already is that the TV makers are worried that normal consumers won't understand how to use the 16:9 mode, and complain about the "messed up" picture.

DJRobX ....

Ouch. The service menu - however - is probably controlled by a removable or upgradeable ROM chip. Why don't you try to aggressively contact Mitsubishi to send a serviceperson come over to "upgrade" your service menu ROM?

I'm sure Mitsubishi has received enough complaints that they've perhaps made a revision already. Or maybe there's an "easter egg" to disable to text you describe.
