Close Caption decoder
Iīm living in Sweden and watch alot of reg.1 DVDs and LDīs for that matter.
Sometimes itīs hard to follow so I like to have the option of subtitles. Now some DVDs and all LDs only have Close Caption which US TVs have built in already and my TV havenīt and for that matter not my Sharp projector ehiter. Now I like to get my hands on a Close Caption decoder. Does anybody have any good WWW that I can order from? They cost a fortune in Sweden. Many Thanks |

If you can live with composite or coaxial cable quality, you can get one of those cheap $99 boxes from one of the "hearing impaired" online shopping sites. (ask me for a listing)
But if you want a S-Video caption decoder, there's a place in Netherlands designed for American LaserDiscs but also works with Region 1 DVD's that sells those decoders for about $500 each, I believe. It has selectable appearances - including a subtitle style font! I'd have to dig up the website. You can decode captions from Region 1 DVD's NLY if you have a DVD player that "passes" the caption data as a hidden signal to the external decoder - some multiformat DVD players, and almost all European DVD players DO NOT pass the caption data - you'd have to buy an American DVD player to pass the caption signal. ------------------ Thanks, Mark Rejhon www.marky.com www.dvdtracker.com/~marky.asp |

An alternative: Two computer hardware decoders, Hollywood Plus and the DxR3, I've heard, WILL pass the caption signal of a Region 1 DVD via S-Video to an external display. But they can't display captions on a computer monitor.
