Progressive Scan DVD players...
Does anybody know when the progressive scan DVD players are going to hit the streets and which TVs will be supported by them? Has anybody seen the output of a progressive scan DVD and care to comment?
It seems like it should be fantastic and basically eliminate the need to buy a quality line doubler that costs thousands of dollars... Thanks! -Scott |

There are no progressive scan DVD players available.
Panasonic just announced a new model, but it's not yet available for sale. This model (it appears) converts the progressive DVD format to interlaced, then back to progressive. Any TV/monitor used must be capable of displaying the 480P image. Not many can do this... |

Just a correction to BillR on the DVD format
All DVDs are recorded as interlaced fields (even films). The DVD player cannot determine whether the original source was progressive (film) or interlaced. So a progressive DVD player merely reconstructs the frame from the two fields and sends it to the TV twice. It may use the repeat_first_field flag to determine whether it should update the picture on every field or only after decoding both fields. |

To answer part of the question: The beloved Sony KL-W9000 50" 16x9 monitor does beeeaaauutiful 480p, however, the only way (currently) to witness it is to hook up a computer with DVD drive, as they output non-interlaced frames.
Check out the KL-W9000 forum at: http://www.thebigpicturedvd.com/cgi-bin/w9000.cgi and see what you're missing! |
