DVD2?
Hi,
I was just wondering if anyone knows anything about DVD2, when it's coming out? I heard by the end of this year (2000)? I mean I have a DVD player and a small collection of movies but I was wondering if I shouldn't wait until DVD2 is out before I really go crazy and spend thousand of dollars on a DVD collection. I know some people like Lucasfilm are not going to release their movies on DVD, maybe they are waiting for DVD2? How much better is it anyways? |

I don't know what you mean by 'DVD2'. I know of the Playstation 2, which will utilise current DVD technology, but the only new formats I've heard of are a long way from becoming a *consumer* reality. You could always wait for the next biggest thing to come along, but in the end, you won't be reaping the benefits at any stage. DVD has proven itself as a worthwhile medium, getting the backing of some major studios (OK, MOST major studios). Even if a higher quality format was to be introduced, I don't think anyone would go for it right now. DVD has become too widely accepted, and the majority of people are happy with the level of quality. If a new format does emerge, I'm sure it will be DVD compatible, so you're in no danger of having an obselete collection!

I'm pretty sure I heard about DVD2. Like it was basically DVD but double the data rate or something, much higher quality. Maybe I'm wrong but I do know that with Lucasfilm not releasing on DVD that's a huge portion of my collection that will go unfulfilled
we think he's waiting for some new technology (I work in a Lucas company btw) before he jumps on the bandwagon, could be he knows something we don't? |

HD DVD is really the only thing on the horizon that could be of any value as a dvd replacement. However, 1) dvd is so entrenched as both a studio and consumer format that the studios would be insane to try to push another format, and 2) development of the laser for hd dvd is still quite a number of years off. Implementation after that is an even bigger hurdle.
