In the short answer: not always. Sony players seem to be highly regarded as the best you can get at the moment, but they are sometimes quite a bit more than players made by other companies. However, there are very nice players that can be had for much less as well. Really, you can get all the advice/opinions in the world on this, but the best thing to do is to go to a few electronics stores with a disk or two and demo them for yourself to make your own judgement. What is good quality to some people, isn't to others.
Of course, that's just my opinion, I could be wrong. ![]() Clortho ------------------ I am the Keymaster clortho@hotmail.com |

There are some quality differences from the different manufacturers, particularly when playing anamorphic DVDs on a standard TV. However, the lesser models of players often use the same decoding engine as their expensive cousins (which was very apparent when Sony had troubles with lip-syching with the 330, 530, and 550 players). Even on the cheapest Orbitron, the picture and sound quality still don't disappoint.
