Apex at Circuit City
Now, I know we as a community have very bad tastes in our mouths when we see the words Circuit City, but it looks like they've got something worth noting, for once.
It's a DVD player from a Chinese company called Apex. I has the ability to turn off region coding! It also has karaoke coding (not sure if it's CD+G yet) with two microphone inputs, coax out (but not fiber), and can play CDs with mp3s burned on them. All this for $170. I have a few friends who have gotten theirs, with no complaints. I should get mine today (I ordered mine at www.circuitcity.com),) so I'll report back. corrected link -Chromy [This message has been edited by Chromy (edited 02-24-2000).] |

Yeah, my dad is still sort of in trouble for getting this one since it's from Circuit Sh%&%y. With one fell swoop, you too can support CC and communism with one purchase! Anyway, it does indeed play burned CD's with mp3's on them. It can even browse through subdirectories on the CD. However, it only displays 8 characters for the name, with the last two being 'N1', so it can be confusing trying to tell which is what if they're not in an obvious order. Haven't tried the region coding thing yet. Anybody know how to access this? Guess I'll have to go looking around the net. The only complaints I'd say are the lack of an optical out, and also it seems to get pretty jaggy and pixelated on really dark parts. More so than the Sony, Toshiba, and RealMagic decoder card players we have here. The remote is also a little cheesy and low quality feeling. But other than that, it all seems good. And it indeed was $179 when my dad got it. So, if you're willing to patronize CC, it's a pretty great deal for its price.

1138, you say it doesn't have optical out. But it does have digital coax output, right?
Not that I would buy one. It sounds like a second-rate machine, based on your comments about the remote and video quality. Plus, my money will never end up at CC, especially with the shiny new Best Buy opening up down the road in a few weeks. Taxi DDS#42 |

Yeah, it does indeed have the coax out. And yeah, it does make a decent post-first DVD player purchase. This is my dad's third DVD player, the others being a great Sony and a Toshiba, so when he wants the high quality, he can use those. Actually, he's using the Apex to replace the Toshiba in my parent's room, so he's not even going to be using the coax on it. I'm still a little irked about the CC thing, but oh well. As long as he knows better in the future. It was sorta of a impulse buy thing I think. At any rate, we now have to find a place for the Toshiba in the house. Kind of disgusting, isn't it? Well, anyway...
