Some research, some questions
Hello people,
I'm about to buy my first DVD player. I don't have a progressive scan TV, so I was looking for something A little research on the web, suggested that the Pioneer DV-440 is probably the way to go. It can play CD/CDR/CDRW/DVD/DVD-R/DVD-RW/DVD+RW/VCD/SVCD/XVCD/XSVCD/MP3, has good audio and video quality and good reliability. It got excellent user ratings from VCDHelp, C|net , Amazon, Audio review, Consumer review and ePenions. This player can be bought in several US locations for Now, for the questions: 1) Is there a better model for a similar price? The reviews aggregated ratings from the sites above seem to imply that there isn't. 2) Is there a model of comparable quality and price but that will also allow me to watch region 1 NTSC as well as region 2 PAL titles on any TV? 3) Where do I find a reliable and inexpensive vendor, preferrably in Canada or one that will ship to Canada without charging me an arm and a leg? Is there a site that compares Canadian "regular" and mail-order shops? Thank you very much, Alex. |

Welcome to the forum alexo!
![]() Unfortunately, I think there are only a couple of DVD players that will play both Region1 NTSC and Region2 PAL in progrssive mode. One is Malta and I forget the other one. Disco Stu should have some info since he's looked into it himself.

Thank you, but the questions that I'm more interested in are:
1) According to the information that I've found on the net, the DV-440 seems to offer the best quality, set of features and user satisfaction in its price range. I'd like to hear other opinions before I buy. 2) I'd like recommendatoins regarding where to buy it in, or shipping to, Canada. Thanks, Alex. |

I'll have to let some of the resident Cannucks(sp?) answer to where to buy, but my experience with Pioneer DVD players is good. They have good quality and reliability. And where I work, they sell out fast, and don't come back very often. You should have no fear regarding Pioneer DVD quality.
Any Canadians wanna give some input on where to buy. The only place I know of is Future Shop, but I know nothing of how they operate. j

Future shop does not currently sell this item. How about US mail-order shops that ship to Canada? Any recommendations? |

Hi there:
That Pioneer is listed on 2001audiovideo.com - they have outlets in Ontario only though - don't know if they will ship or not. What you might want to do is check out the Panasonic DVD-RV31, which is comparable in price, features, and quality. It only has an optical digital output, but other than that it's a great player. It's what I'm using right now and it is fantastic (and it's also available at future shop and radioshack.ca) |

For shipping info, try Price Grabber.com:
http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_g...#compareprices enter your ZIP code and they will calculate the shipping costs to you. Alternatively, maybe someone in the U.S. can help out..... Send me private e-mail so we can discuss this more. Peace......
