Tivo?

Anybody else here have a Tivo? I'm just curious what other people's impressions are. I'm really liking mine.

I have a replay tv which is very similar, and different in some ways. But I do love it and it has completely modified my tv viewing.

A good friend of mine got a Tivo for his birthday last week. He asked me to set it up. When we were hooking it up, we couldn't believe that you had to hook it up to a telephone line, and PAY for the Tivo service.

He didn't want that, so we packed it back up (We tried hooking it up without having to plug the phone line in, but that didn't work, of course...) and sent it back.

Does ReplayTV also require that you pay a monthly fee for their TV-Guide like service?

Gues that settles that, when it comes to which system I would buy...

Why did you Tivo guys decide to buy Tivo instead of the free one?

I wanted the Sony model, and they only make Tivo's. Plus I got a discount from a friend by siging up through him. Also, apparently the Replay costs $200 more than a Tivo which is exactly the cost of a lifelong subscription to the Tivo service.

Anyway, I highly reccomend these units. It makes watching TV a whole new experience.

Love my Tivo! Got to love any device that let's you pause and/or back-up when you want, and that let's you zip through commercials.

Don't know if replay tv can do this also, but I especially like Tivo's season pass feature. I only have to tell it once to record, say French & Saunders, and Tivo finds and records it whenever it's on, saving me the hassle of trying to figure out BBC's schedule. You do have to monitor the little bugger with shows that may run over schedule, e.g., football games, award shows; Tivo records by the schedule, 3 hours and not a minute more.

Vertigo,

Replay doesn't call it a season pass, but you can have it set up to record every time it finds a show either by title, actors, director, description, etc. In other words I can have it record anything it finds with Cary Grant or the word Sex in the title, or directed by Hitchcock.

I can also instantly jump to any location in a recorded show (i.e. 1:15), which I believe Tivo can't do.

I guess if The Rock reads this, he'll instantly run out to get such a thing

A Tivo costs like $400 for the unit and then you have the choice of paying for the Tivo service on a monthly basis (i think it's $10) or all at once which lasts forever (which is $200). Now a Replay costs $600 but the service is included, so they both cost $600 for the unit and service. Tivo just gives you the option of doing it monthly(who knows why you would). The reason you have to hook it up to the phone line is so it can download the program listings and it will update the software from time to time (a real nice feature). I'm sure Replay is the same way. I've had my Tivo since last Fall and I love it. It's the best piece of electronics I have bought I think. If you watch a lot of TV it can't be beat. Now back when (last fall) I heard Replay had problems, but I think the newer units work better now. I am very happy with my Philips made Tivo though. I've never used the Sony one, but I figure they are the same (the Sony looks a bit cooler).

I didn't realize the Rock was such a big Cary Grant fan
