Speaker Wire
Hi,
I just got my Sony SAV-505 speakers today and I was wondering if someone could answer a few questions for me? First is there a difference between the speaker wire that came with the speakers and speaker wire like Monster XP? If so what is the difference? Also, does it matter which I use? I like good sound...but I don't really have a 'full' home theater. I just have a simple one for my apartment so I am wondering if for what equipment I have would it really matter what wire I use? I bought some Monster XP in anticipation that my speakers wouldn't come with wire...but since they do I am wondering if the sony wire is comprable (to the Monster). I would just assume take the Monster XP back ($70) if it is. Thanks. -igo [This message has been edited by Mr. Igo (edited 08-21-2000).] |

personally, unless the supplied wire is very thin and cheap, I'd stick with it over the monster wire. I don't think that expensive or exotic wires really add much if anything to sound quality. I just went to Fry's and got some nice 12 gauge wire and it seems to do the job just fine in my HT. Though I'm sure there are others who will sing praises about monster cable. I just don't believe in it, IMHO.

This is an age old debate that will rage for many moons to come. The best answer is to try for yourself. A good specialist dealer should let you trial cable or have some demo cable that he can lend you so that you can see if you can hear a difference. To my mind there is an obvious difference in sound quality between speaker cables and interconnects and so too to many millions. Companies such as Nordost specialise in only cables and I doubt they would have been able to pull the wool over so many people's ears for so long unless there is a point to the whole thing. I would advise anyone purchasing an HT to set aside at least 10% of the total cost of their system to spend on cables. Many cables can change the character of your system and can be used as tone controls. But I could talk till I'm blue in the face - go and hear for yourself and I would be truly interested in your findings so please post them here. By the way, if you can listen to some Nordost - they'll blow you away I'm certain.
