Question about mp3+dvd player

I'm trying to decide whether or not I care if my next dvd player has the ability to play mp3s. I don't really know very much about mp3 players. I have what is probably a stupid question about dvd players capable of playing mp3s. I've always been able to download mp3 files to my computer, convert them to wave files, and burn them onto a cd-r. My question is, if my dvd player can play mp3s, does this mean I can simply copy the mp3 files from my computer to a disc without converting them to wave form, essentially allowing me to put many more songs on one disc, or does the mp3 capability of a dvd player have to do with something else? If my question comes across clearly, I'd appreciate any feedback. Thanks.

3D,

Welcome to the forum!

If you have an .mp3 capable DVD player, you can burn the .mp3s directly to a CDR without a .wav file conversion. Most players with the .mp3 feature have some sort of "browser" that lets you explore the contents of the CD and set up a playlist.

Depending on the quality of the .mp3s, you'll be able to get a good 10-12 hours of music per disc. Sometimes, on those nights when I know I will be studying from like 11PM-5AM, I throw in an .mp3 disc and hit random. I won't hear the same song twice all night. In fact, if I leave that same disc in the player, I won't hear the same song for a few days.

One thing to keep in mind, though is that stand-alone .mp3 players that will read a CDR are getting quite cheap these days. I saw one at Fry's the other day for fifty bucks. This was a portable unit (it looked like a Discman or something), so it could go with you in the car or to work. When at home, you could simply jack it into your receiver, and have the same capability that an .mp3 compatible DVD player will give you.

Thanks for the feedback mp3pir8. I wound up getting the panasonic cv-51 5 disc changer which has mp3 capabilities.

Just to add a little more!

I have a JVC XV-SA70BK player with MP3 capabilities. My player will only play up to 100 MP3 tracks. So lets say U got a disc with 170 or so tracks, U'll only hear 100 of them! I believe most DVD players that have this capability are the same!

Thanks for the heads up. It came a little bit late for me as I had already purchased a dvd player with mp3 capabilities by the time I read your message. However, as it turns out, the Panasonic cv51 plays past track number 100. So reading your warning too late didn't really matter. Thanks again.
