Surround Question

Hey All

Weird problem with my setup. My rear speakers are mounted sorta high, probably eight feet up the wall and are angled down towards the center of the room.

The problem is, I rarely hear anything coming from them when I am sitting below them. When I sit to the side of them, I can hear rear channel activity and seperation. But in front of them I barely hear anything at all.

I don't know the exact model of the speaker but I do know they are BOSS speakers. I'll try to get a picture posted so you can see how they are setup. Until then, any thoughts?

Try facing the speakers toward your rear wall, angled downwards (yeah, aimed behind the listening area)...

Seriously, if you want a good surround effect you want that sound to be reflected off your rear walls into the listening area. Give it a whirl, maybe up the levels coming out the surround channels one or two notches to compensate for the fact that their aimed at the wall.

If you play pool, think of it as a bank-shot.

You could try lowering them, like to ear level. Are you sitting right under them?

Here is a pic looking at the wall where the speakers are mounted.

When you sit on the part of the couch that is directly against the rear wall, you are more or less sitting under the speakers, probably with most of the sound going right over your head. Probably my problem. But I was also sitting on the outer corner this weekend and wasn't hearing much rear channel activity from their either.

Maybe lower them and put them on the side walls facing the sofa area.

Looks like you have a pretty tough room.

Woah...you got a lot of problems there. OK, you need to rearrange the room, so that that back wall with the windows isn't the back the wall. Even if you move the speakers off the back wall and to the side walls, those curtains are going to screw up the sound. If you have to have your room that way, try mounting the speakers to the celing pointing nearly straight down (or towards the back wall) or on the side walls c. 7' off the floor, with the speakers facing each other. At least that's what I would try to do, but I understand the spousal acceptance factor, and your set up looks pretty good vis-a-vis not so much in the way of exposed wire etc. I don't know how much you feel like messing with it, but you might even try secreting them behing the curtains...I'm tellin' you, they'll sound awesome if you point them toward the rear wall, I know it sounds insane...but it works.

Say what??? I mean, they are small speakers and all, but...jeeesh. Plus I don't see how this will help the sound...

Other than that, Templar has some good advice there.

Well, if done correctly it wouldn't hurt the sound either...

I was noticing how he has those mighty fine drapes, and the house looks...well much too nice for a guy to be in charge of it.

See if you can follow me around the room here...logically I assume that somewhere along the line a woman was involved in the decorating decisions. 95-99% of women (from my personal experience) would be horrified if you took a nice set up like he has in that picture and moved the speakers around and ran a lot of contrast colored (read black or gray) speaker wire all over the walls and / or floors. If my set up were that neat, and then I started running lines all over the room, and putting speakers in awkward loacations, my wife would first pout a little...and if I didn't get the hint, I would probably be accidentally maimed (it's not fuckin' funny), or she would remember and pay me back, c.f. this thread for more info on that.

I'm just lookin' out for those other considerations...some of us can't just up and start drilling mounting hardware into the walls without some kind of compromise...

Not so much that I CAN'T start drilling new holes, the fact of the matter is I don't WANT to drill new holes. I'll be happy to move them maybe one more time so long as I know I'll get the best responce from where I move them to. I'm willing to get some new speakers when I get a bit more cash and I'm open to suggestions. But not really expensive speakers either. My front speakers other then my surround are JBL's so I should probably go for a match.
