DVD-Audio problems
I just got my Toshiba 5700, and I am having problems with DVD-A playback. I can get the surround to work when it plays back the dolby digital sound file, but it will not play the surround DVD-A sound file at all. I can only get sound from my two front speakers. even with the test tones from the player itself, I cannot get any sound other than the two front speakers. It works fine with DTS, DD and all other sound files, but it will not play the surround DVD-A for some reason.
I have a Kenwood KRF-V7773D (comparable to the VR-4080...the KRF is built specifically for the military stores, where I got it.), and I'm using the digital co-ax for DTS and DD, plus the 6 channel outputs/inputs for the DVD-A sound. The funny thing is, the 6 channel sound works for dvd's, but not DVD-A. any ideas? thanks in advance. ------------------ Mario Sunshine: Keeping the world safe for sippy birds everywhere. |

Kind of a no-brainer, but check to see if the disc was recorded in 5.1. I'm not sure about DVD-A, but SACD is not always 5.1.
Also, check to make sure your receiver is set to the 5.1 input, and not to the DVD input. j ------------------ Co-Moderator Software Forum Was it a dream where you see yourself standing in sort of sun-god robes on a pyramid, with a thousand naked women screaming and throwing little pickles at you? |

Have you connected 6-channel analog outputs form your DVD-A player to corresponding 6-channel input on your receiver?
That is the only way to get DVD-audio playback. You can not use digital output for DVD-audio. |

ok, starting over:
yes, I checked the wires numerous times, even suspecting it WAS the wires, because I cannot find a 6-pack of cords just laying in any ol' store for DVD-A, you know? anyways, I was getting sound from the 2 front channels, that was it. I did a little bit of figuring, and came up with a way to check the connections. here goes: 1. use the CD-1 inputs for each chanel. If I could hear sound coming from the cd setting, the dvd player was fine, but the receiver was busted. well, that's what was wrong. the receiver's 6 channel inputs are not wired right, or something. I am not sure what to do about it, but I emailed kenwood and am also going to call them tomorrow. I hope they consider this their fault, and will cover it. receivers are damn heavy to just be shipping willy-nilly for repairs! thanks for the help, btw. ------------------ Mario Sunshine: Keeping the world safe for sippy birds everywhere. |

Just one more thing that crosses my mind.
6-channel analog input signal on your receiver should not be converted back to digital for internal processing. I don’t know why on earth would any receiver do that, but apparently there are some that do just that. ![]() |

OK, I figured it out. Turns out it WAS the receiver's fault, but not a wiring problem. Seems that in order to get sound from the 6-channel inputs, you have to physically turn the receiver's analog inputs on, so to speak. In other words, the analog inputs do not receive a signal until you tell them to receive a signal. This is a highly annoying feature, to say the least. I can't even set it to AUTO, because that's just for the digital signals.
Good thing I don't have a lot of DVD-Audio discs. ![]() ------------------ Mario Sunshine: Keeping the world safe for sippy birds everywhere. EDIT: thanks again for all the help. [This message has been edited by bune duggy (edited 11-14-2001).] |
