My Oritron is finally dying like everyone told me it would.

I got an Oritron for Christmas last year from my sister. Her intentions were good, but she went for the cheap brand at Wal-Mart. What do you expect with a warranty of 60 days. Although it lasted longer than everyone thought it would, it's finally going down.

Anyone have a suggestion on a modestly priced DVD player with no frills. I'm OK with the basics for now....Until I can afford a HDTV.

Just the other day I was at my local Sams Club, and they had a Pioneer DV-434 progressive scan player for like $159.00

If you get the DV-434, do NOT get it because of it's progressive output. The DV-434 is NOT a good progressive player at all. You can find the Panasonic RP56 online for $200 shipped which is a great progressive player. The DV-343 is a good entry level player and the DV-440 is a slim profile interlaced only (I think) player which should also be a good entry level player. I don't know much about the DV-440.

The Toshiba SD-2710 is another good entry level player, that I would also recommend.

Peace.....

Empire,

Wow. I didn't even know you had a DVD player. The only place I have ever seen you post is in the off-topic forum.

At $159 I wouldn't have expected its progressive scan capabilities to be very good.

Even at the MSRP of $299, the progressive scan capabilities are not good at all. It seems like this player is more of a marketing "angle" than anything else. The Panasonic RP56 for $200 shipped (roughly $40 more than the DV-434) is an EXCELLENT deal for a KICK A** progressive scan DVD player.....

Peace.....

Yep. Prefer DVD over all other film media at home. I just don't talk movies that much anymore. I don't have as much time these days for movies as I did before getting married. Still passionate about film though.

I found DVDFile when I had more time and ended up spending more time in the off-topic forum. But with my new status regarding mobility and freedom, I will be branching out on the message boards and DVD's. Although with my player getting ready to push daisies those days may be limited.
