Couldn't layer changes be eliminated by just......
Putting a small buffer of memory into each player? My fist DVD Player was actually me playing my DVDs off of my PC via a RealMagic Hollywood+. I never experienced one layer change due to the fact that the PC had memory to buffer out the pause caused by the layer change on set-top players. Couldn't the problem of layer changes be altogether eliminated by just putting a small memory buffer in each player? Surely it wouldn't add that much to the price...........

Sure, but apparently most don't want to.

I believe the Denon DVD-2800 has the "best" layer change right now and I think they've added MORE RAM to the player to help with that. Considering how cheap RAM is these days, I don't know why the players don't come with more RAM myself....
Peace..... |

The problem with having buffers in players is memory cost. The players only need a small amount of memory but this is more expensive than a larger amount of memory at the moment and it's to expensive to implement the larger memory in players. |

I imagine that's it kat - the ram chips are nothing, but you can't just add RAM, you've got to add a memory controller, too, you've got to allocate additional space on the circuit board, you've got to route all playback through your buffer, except if you do tht in the menus you'll get a buffer delay while navigating, so you've got to figure out when to buffer and when not to, etc. Now that I think about it I would imagine NUON enhanced players have everything needed to buffer a layer change if they thought to design it that way. Anyone with a NUON care to speak on the subject?
