FWIW, I've got an Onkyo, and I'm very pleased with it.

Well, how low under that amount are you looking for? You can get DD 5.1 systems for $200 or less, but they aren't that good. What all features do you want, etc.?

Speakers. well, for around 900us, you can picl up a few pretty good sounding speaker packages. The BIG question is...how big is your room?

Boston Accoustics, one of my favorite.

CR65 2 pair @ 199.95 a pair
CRC @ 199.95
PV400 powered sub @ 299.95

Yamaha also makes a pretty good little sub in the $300 price range(I have two of them )YST-SW305.

PSB makes a stunning set of speakers in their Alpha line that are very affordavle, and will realy knock your socks off, considering their low price. The Alpha B(first one on the list) retails for 249 a pair.
Alpha C for 229, and a good sub(like the Yamaha ) and you will be set.

Another affordable set of speakers that you may want to consider is Atlantic Technologies. They have a very good sounding set of speakers just under their THX select level that should perform admirably.

Here is a deal that should have most of everything you are looking for. Onecall.com had a package deal with the Onkyo TXDS 696 and AT system 170 for 1265.93. That's receiver and 5.1 speaker system for that price.

I am not sure about the Onkyo, but Onecall is an authorized AT dealer, so you won't have any warranty issues for the speakers.

hope this helps

Check out NHT. For good HT sound on a budget I recomend the SuperOnes, $160.00 each. Get five and a sub.

as far as features go, nothing fancy but still good sounding. Also I have 2 OLD(and I mean old[like 20 years])speakers can I just add two more side speakers then a center speaker and a sub and of course a receiver and receive 5.1 CH of auio or will I need all new speakers. Also is an amp needed?

P.S I'm kinda leaning toward a Sony system
