In general, for most Americans a PAL converter is actually a PAL TO NTSC converter. PAL is the video signal for Europe and parts of Asia, Africa and South America. In North America the video signal is strictly NTSC. In Europe, televisions accept NTSC PAL AND SECAM (YET A THIRD VIDEO SIGNAL) even though broadcast and video's are produced strictly in the pal format. In North America these TV's are not available. So the only way to view a PAL signal, is to get a converter that will convert in this case the PAL signal DVD into an NTSC video signal, so it can be displayed on your NTSC television,

No, sadly they are not available at chain stores. Most of the people that work at good guys are clueless. Here's a tip though, if you have a few grand to through down on a new Tv, good guys DOES carry the LOEWE televisions which are from Germany, and these TV's accept PAL, NTSC and SECAM!
Though your GG sales ASSociate will not know what your'e talking about. As I myself gave up on finding a decent converter, I had a built in one for a while on a Sampo dvd player(which was so buggy, I had to chuck it). I am strictly a region 1 man, now. It's just to much hassle, and the quality of UNIVERSAL machines just isn't good enough to make me want to shell out for a 1000 worth of cheapo made in some sweat shop 10 year old junk. However do a "pal converter" search and you'll come up with a few things, I remember seeing a decent region free dvd player plus seperate converter package deal for around 550, and i thought it was a good deal. However macrovision was still, there. I don't make tapes, cause vhs is poop, but I like to know I could if I wanted to ![]() |
