Any Experience

I bought this Yamaha Reciever on a whim today because I got a good deal. I havnt opened it up yet due to the fact I had to come straight to work. I was just wondering if anyone had any opinions or experience with this paticular reciever. I know it only has 5.1 but all I have had til this point was Dolby Pro Logic. Right now I also have some pretty worthless speakers and no Subwoofer, though I am getting a Sony 50 watt subwoofer in about a week. If anybody can let me know anything about this paticular reciever I would appreciate it.

It looks pretty hot, you have all the sound fomrats bar DTS Matrix Discrete, and looks quite a nice deal for the money. BTW how much did you pay?

This looks quite a good price.

I got it brand new in the box for $206. I have a dumb question now. I have never had DTS before and I am not sure its working. I fooled with it some last night using Terminator 2 Ultimate Edition. I set it for DTS on the DVD and heard the DTS trailor but I noticed that the display on the reciever was still reading Dolby Pro Logic II. Is that normal or should the display read DTS. I was also wondering since I heard the DTS trailor if that actually means its in DTS or not. I know with my old reciever I could never even hear the DTS trailor.

I'm not familiar with this receiver but I would image a "dts" light would light up when a dts signal is detected.

Hmmmmm......

Peace....

I figured out my DTS problem. I didn't have the Audio Coaxle cable hooked to the reciever. Duh!!!

Anyway now that I have everything hooked up right I have found out that my ultra cheapie Fisher center speaker is no good. All the voices are very flat. I ended up taking one of my full size speakers from an old Technics stereo my ex wife had and I am using that for my center speaker. (Yes I know it's white trash ghetto but it's only temperary)

Now I need some advice on a good center speaker. I would prefer not to spend over $200 and still get some some good quality.

Any suggestions?

Right now I am using two old Fisher floorstanding speakers. I can't even to begin to remember how much power they have. After getting a center speaker my next purchase will hopefully be for Yamaha 8" 3-way Bass Reflex Tower Speakers.

I am trying to build this system piece by piece. The reciever was the first piece and now I am trying to find a moderetly priced center speaker that performs well.

If you are eventually getting Yamaha fronts, then my suggestion would be getting a matching center, also from Yamaha. In most cases, your front 3 speakers should be similar - and that 'usually' means the same manufacturer. After looking at Yamahas website, I'm unsure which speakers you plan on getting (I had no idea they sold so many), however, they should have a center that matches the fronts. Have you auditioned the Yamahas against JBL's ? You may want to give that a shot too. Audition as much as possible!!
