Sony DVD player repair?

My Sony DVP-S530D has served me well for a few years, and it still does the job, except for one glitch: It no longer lets me turn off closed captioning. Every DVD I play plays with the English subtitles on, even after I "turn them off" using the menu system with the remote.

Can this be repaired cheaply -- say, with the replacement of a cheap chip -- or would I end up spending as much on the repair as I would on a new player? Any ideas, anyone?

I would doubt anything on a DVD player can be replaced "cheaply" due to the simple fact the labor rates range anywhere from $50-$100us an hour. I would go to a shop that will give you an estimate. If that estimate is acceptable, then every one is happy.

good luck.

Unfortunately most shops these days charge a minimum "diagnostic" fee, applicable to any actual repairs. They ususally charge in the $40-60 range.

You may want to contact Sony, particularly if you have a local service center like we do here in Minneapolis. It may be as simple as a firmware upgrade, which shouldn't cost too much. The 530D is still a decent player, particularly if you have a 5.1 'ready' receiver.

Thanks. I found out that Sony service centers' fixed price to repair this player is $132. Since I can get a new Pioneer DV-353K for $119 including shipping, the repair isn't worth it. But I am going to e-mail Sony to ask whether they offer a free firmware upgrade that might fix this problem.

That's a bummer. A coworker of mine sent a broken Sony DVD player back to them (while under warranty) and instead of fixing the machine, they just sent her a new one. I believe that all it cost her was the price to box it up and ship the broken unit to them.

The Pioneer won't let you down. I've had a DV-440 for a year now and it's played everything I've put in it without a glitch.

A LOT of people can't see it either. Unfortunately, there are some people whose eyes are VERY sensitive to it and it's very annoying to them. I'm glad I don't fall into that category....

Peace...
