Help Me (Widescreen TV)
My father wants to buy this model of Sony's brand of WEGA TVs:
http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTE...EAAADxAVa61eQC It's a 36 incher priced at $2000, however he knows a salesman at his workplace and he's going to get it for him for $1500. I'm a big fan of widescreen movies and I want to convince my dad that it isn't worth buying a 4 x 3 TV for that price. What other TV models, priced at a similar range (around $1500) and having 16 x 9 screens, can I suggest to him? I hope he doesn't get this TV and gets a widescreen instead. ![]() |

Well, depending on how much 4x2 material you watch, that Tv could be great.
The picture on it is great and the speakers aren't an issue if you have it hooked up to a HT setup. It's HD capable and has the 16x9 squish mode for anamorphic DVDs. You can't really get any bigger sized direct view sets and any that are widescreen aren't any bigger picture wise in LBX format. Pretty much the only way to go bigger is with a rear projection set. So, again depending on how much 4x3 you watch, it can be a great compromise during this transition period.

What does the 16x9 squish mode do?
I assume it's the same as Auto 16:9 Enhanced Mode? I really don't watch TV that much anymore. I mostly use my TV now to watch DVDs. I guess this set could be great for watching sporting events, since it's going in the living room, but I'd really prefer a widescreen. ![]() |

When you compare wide screen material on the 34" 16:9 with the 36" 4:3 I think you find that there is little size diffrence in the actual picture. I know that when you compare the 34" with the 40" 4:3, the picture is actually larger on the 40". So I dont really see the point to the 34" unless you dont watch any 4:3 material at all. Im a big fan on the wega line, just thought I throw that in there

I bought the Panasonic 53 inch HDTV three weeks ago for $100 bucks more than the one in Tom's link, but my price included a four-year in-house warranty that normally runs an extra $300 and I got free delivery from Best Buy.
It was an expensive upgrade, but the welcome change was well worth it once I sat down and watched my first DVD in anamorphic widescreen. I'm still thrilled to see that behemoth sitting in my room every time I get home, and watching DVDs has never been the same... ![]() |
