I've drifted into the arena of the unwell (5.1 newbie)

So, after all this time I finally went out and got myself a surround system - I had a choice (restricted by finances) to either a Sony or Kenwood (both $299). I finally went with the Kenwood as it had more ooomph (but no powered sub-woofer) but it also had ProLogic II so it looked like I'd get a few more years out of the receiver.

Anyway, realistically I know there are better sounding setups out there but to my ears this sounds f***ing fantastic! I've spent the last few hours pulling out all the demo discs that have been recommended through the hundreds of "what's your favourite a/v demo" threads that litter the File. My favourite so far... either the beach landing in Saving Private Ryan (especially the underwater bits) or when Sauron implodes (?) at the beginning of FOTR (DTS baby!

Anyway, my son is bugging me to watch Gladiator so I don't want to let the little guy down

Ha!

Sid,

Glad you finally succumbed to the peer pressure and finally broke down and got yourself a 5.1 set up. Congrats.

Sid, some day I will join you. But first I have to pay off my layaway for my JBL speakers (which cost as much as your whole set up), then I'll need to get a receiver. Sometimes I wonder if I should just forget the speakers (and I recently found out that the sub is HUGE!) and go Home Theater in a box.

Isn't Pro Logic 2 the coolest thing ever? I was watching Frailty on digital cable video on demand and I was getting the coolest split surround effects from a 2 channel stereo source. It makes everything 5.1. I love listening to Beatles on it, too.

From what I've heard it seems pretty cool for TV and the GC but as far as regular audio CD's go I'm a bit of a purist and can only listen to them in regular stereo or mono - The Beatles in 5.1? naaaaaaa

Yeah, it's non traditional, but it's still cool. I'll be curious how McCartney remixes the catalog into 5.1 for the upcoming Anthology DVDs.

Prologic II does great things to TV and movie programs already encoded in Prologic. I can't say I'm too amazed with the sound it creates from most stereo music sources, though.

Maybe Dolby needs to come up with "ProMusic" or "DolbyMusic" or something. Heck, lets see, they have Dolby Stereo, Dolby Surround, Dolby Pro Logic, Dolby Pro Logic II, Dolby Digital, Dolby Headphone, Dolby Speaker...I'm sure if we harassed them enough, they'd come up with something cool for stereo music as well.

It does. Pro Logic 2 Movie and Pro Logic 2 Music. The Music feaure allows you to adjust the spread of how wide the center speaker is (spills into the left and right) and how deep the image is from front to rear. You get full simulated surround 5.1 with 2 channel music. You get more effect with material that has good L R separation to begin with. I have no idea why someone said it didn't work. You either like it or not, but it does work.

Welcome to the world of 5.1, as you've no doubt discovered it makes previously viewed discs seem new again.

Most definitely... it's caused a problem - a while back I was trying to work out how to watch all the discs that I haven't got round to viewing yet but now I'm rewatching all the old stuff! not enough time

My receiver has DTS: Neo 6 (Music and Cinema). Is ProLogic II the same type of thing?

From DTS Online -

7. What is Neo:6?
DTS Neo:6 is an advanced matrix decoder. It will take any two-channel source and expand it into five or six channels, depending on the user’s speaker layout. Two-channel sources include VHS tapes, broadcast televi-sion, stereo CDs and DVDs. DTS Neo:6 provides separate, optimized modes for stereo music materials and matrix surround motion picture soundtracks. DTS Neo:6 also decodes a center-surround channel from Extended Surround matrix soundtracks.

Sounds the same kind of thing as ProLogic II.

I wonder if a "dts" audio encoding is still required for Neo:6 to "work its magic" or does one simply put their receiver in Neo:6 mode and it "works" on non-dts encoded material.

Hmmmm........

I just found this, which doesn't address the details in as much detail was we would have liked....

Peace.....

I read it as any audio source "It will take any two-channel source and expand it into five or six channels"...

Yeah, I'm reading up about this over on another forum and it's sounding like Neo:6 is simply a competitor to DPL II and they both function about the same, or at least achieve the same goal.

Peace.....

My Sony STR-DA2ES receiver does dts Neo 6. It's pretty cool, especially if you have the additional rear center channel speaker. It's much like DPLII, but with the additional speaker factored in.

What about one with some power? Like a 600 watt system? Would that be workable? I'm not looking for one of those systems that have 200 or 300 total output.

My Kenwood is 600 watts and in our large-ish living room it sounds just fine IMO.

When filling a large room, Watts isn't as important as Amps. This is where high curent amps like your higher end units shine. Some of the less expensive Harmon Kardons have the high current design that is found in their higher end units. Receivers in the $4-600 should do well in a room that is up to say 20X24. If you have high cielings, you may want to cinsider a more expensive unit.

Of course YMMV
