Possible to connect PC speakers to mono TV?
I have a mono TV in my bedroom with a DVD player hooked up to it. I recently found a pair of PC speakers in my closet. Is it possible for me to hook those speakers up to my TV and get stereo sound for my DVD player?
Thanks for any help. Last edited by raging_bull : 12-15-2002 at 09:14 PM. |

Depends on if the PC Speakers have built in amplification or not. Most modern PC Speakers are amplified (if you plug them in, chances are they are). Typically they have a 1/8" stereo plug going to them so you'd need a Y-cable going from two RCA-type line-outs to a 1/8" female stereo jack. You'd probably find what you need at Radio Shack pretty easily. Then you'd hook the Y-Cable between the speakers and DVD player's audio out, and you should be fine.

There are a couple of things to consider, depending on the situation. But, yes you can connect them up and have them working fine.
If your DVD player has a Headphone socket: Connect the PC speakers up to the socket using a 5.5mm to 3.5mm converter. If your DVD player doesn't have a headphone socket: Use it's line output (stereo), with a 3.5mm to phono (RCA) lead to connect your PC speakers. Note that a lot of cables provide a plug, and you need a socket connection. If you can't find a socket connection, look for a socket-socket plug, or, if you have to like me, use a Y adapter like shown. The pics below may help: |
