Why Turn Off Your DVD Player?

Just as the heading says, why not just leave it one all the time like your VCR?

Well, I don't know about anyone else, but mine turns off automatically after about ten minutes of being on while not playing a disc. So even if I wanted to leave it on, I couldn't.

Cause the light on my player would keep me up at night. I hate having any light in my room when i go to sleep. My player is in my room right across from my bed. So it gets me at my eyes.

Why wouldn't you turn it off? Unless the furniture in my living room suddenly gets an urge to watch a movie, there's no need for it to be on when I'm not home, or sleeping, or doing anything else besides watching a DVD on it.

That and I'm a greedy miser who turns off anything possible to save on electricity costs .

I do too. Leaving a device on causes a higher drain on the power supply and usually generates more heat. More heat is usually considered bad.

Of course I do it for the light issues, as I have 2 VCRs in my bedroom and 2 in my living room with my DVD player. If I had them all on at once it would be pretty bright from all those LCDs.

If I don't turn it off, it will start transmitting my brainwaves to the mothership.

(Sorry, I think I spent too much time watching "Taken" last week...)

Yepper. Both counts.

my VCR stays on for Cable reason, why not leave your player on all the time, well it depends what you are doing, it could be bad for whatever disc is in there, since i dont know too much about DVD hardware (the inner workings), maybe someone can back me up on this or shoot me down. a DVD has to search for the menu on the DVD each time it recycles, so if you were just to leave your player on, not stopping the DVD, it could have the effect of wearing out your disc if you did it for too long with the same disc. otherwise if your stopping the disc and just leaving the player on, there is the electricity issue still, any electronic component needs the chance too cool down.

Discs are not going to wear out. The player is going to break before the disc fails.

Each DVD player probably has a certain shelf life, too, where the laser assembly may work for a certain number of hours, whether it's 2000 hours or 20,000 hours.

Leave it on when it's not in use, and you could possibly be wearing out the moving mechanisms in your player more quickly.

I shut my DVD player off when it's not in use, as I do with my VCRs to their standby mode.

I've always turned off all my equipment when I'm done with it.
