Region Free Player PAL -> NTSC Etc. Question

I wanna get a region free player that does PAL to NTSC and all that fun stuff. Do these things actually work well? I see a Daewoo one for really cheap. I just need it as a secondary to watch Manic Street Preachers DVD's!! Any help would be great!

For a cheap one you could check out either the Apex (which I have) or a Cyberhome 500 (region free after remote hack/ntsc>pal/progressive scan) which is cheap at BB and to which I'm about to get. The Apex has a problem playing R2 anamorphic w/s discs that apparently the Cyberhome doesn't... I'm picking one up tonight as it's only $69 with a $20 rebate.

Remember when you are paying sub $100 they are not going to be great although my little Apex has played everything I've thrown at it for 18 months without even a burp If you want to splash some cash then check out the Malata's.

Always glad to help a Manics fan out...

Thanks! I'll just go ahead and grab one. I really really REALLY want to watch my Live in Cuba and Forever Delayed DVD's! And Leaving the 20th Century! It's such a shame that these aren't available in North America!

Was just looking at the CyberHome, figure I'll go with that. How easy is the remote hack? How do I get the instructions? Is it permanent? And will I be able to play PAL Region 2 discs without too much trouble?

If you want a real region free player go with the Malata. Do a search here, we've talked about it quite a bit.

I doubt the Apex or the CyberHome can convert PAL to NTSC, btw.

Of course you generally get what you pay for, the Malata is close to $300 but then it's a good DVD player to begin with.

Both the Apex and Cyberhome convert PAL>NTSC and vice versa although obviously not as well as a Malata.

I just picked up the Cyberhome 500 for $49 from Best Buy and after a year or so with the Apex this is like a breath of fresh air (don't laugh ). The PAL->NTSC conversion is a hundred times better than the Apex and it also plays back my R2 anamorphic w/s discs without stretching. What a bargain!

Can't argue with that, that is a bargain.

While we are on the subject there is a guy over on the HTF who swears this performs the same or better than his Malata
