best DVD player for layer switching...
does anyone have any recommendations as to a good mid level player that handles layer switching well?
(i.e. one that does it most unnoticably). my panasonic A-115 kinda sucks for it as it takes about a second on alot of discs ...otherwise it's been a GREAT player. i'd kinda like to stick with panasonic, but if there is better, i would look into it... just no sony...i HATE sony. too many bad experiences. and from reading about all the disc problems with the toshiba players, i'd kinda like to stay away from those too. |

Use a computer for seamless layer changes.

From what I understand, the Denon DVD-1600 and the DVD-3800 have the "fastest" layer changes on the market right now.....

Really? I have a DVD-1600 and I'm not impressed with the layer change speed. Seems identical to the Panasonic RP-(whatever) it replaced. Lasts close to 1 second when I notice it. Is that considered fast?
Other than that, the DVD-1600 is a sweet player. Excellent progressive scan and awesome audio performance with DVD-audio because you can turn off the video circuits. I believe the DVD-2800MKII has a larger buffer than the DVD-1600 so it might be faster. |

I know I've talked a lot about my cheap Apex player lately, but when I read the title of this thread it struck me, "I haven't noticed a layer changed since I got that new POS Apex player."
Chalk that up as one more reason I like this player. Of course, I can't stand it for a couple of good reasons too.

I'm completely amazed that a major company (Sony, Panasonic, Philips, JVC, Pioneer) haven't released a player with a big fat RAM buffer, or something similar, to kill layer-switching annoyances. When I got my player in early 99, my first assumption was that the visible layer switching would be a temporary annoyance, and that within a few years it would be a non-issue. I guess I shouldn't hold my breath...

I guess it all comes down to economics....
![]() By the way, from what I understand layer changes are part of the DVD spec and DVDs without layer changes are technically "out of spec". Interesting indeed.... ![]() Peace...

As with tomcat, I have a Pioneer 656a. I find it has a fairly noticable layer change. Not the worse I've seen, but still a bit annoying. I also have a Pioneer DV-434 in the bedroom and I have never noticed a layer change unless I see the flash of the word "menu" on the display. The 434 is out of production now, but it has served me well for the last few years.
