what kind of TV will they be connecting the player to? I voted for the Pioneer DV-656a as I own this player and am currently comparing it to the Sony DVP-NS715P. The Sony produces a beautiful picture, but I notice a bit more noise than I would like and I notice more combing than I have (so far) on my Pioneer DV-656a. Here is one test scene to use to see what I mean. On Swordfish go to chapter 12, the scene where Halle Berry is topless , and look at the wood rafters over the guy's head. With the Sony, (in progressive mode) I see a TON of combing, almost like the wood slats are "dancing" where on the Pioneer the slats are dead on solid.

I also notice some noise in Star Wars Episode II in the chapter where Chancellor Palpatine is talking with Yoda and Mace Windu and others in that room with the red walls. With the Sony, I notice noise in the red on the wall where on the Pioneer the noise is almost not noticable at all.

The Pioneer also supports DVD-Audio as well as CD/CD-R/CD-RW/MP3, etc....

I'm not familiar with the Panasonic. I got the Pioneer for $178 SHIPPED and the Sony for $199 + tax at my local Good Guys.

The Pioneer is easy to use and iss a rock solied, robust player. It plays each DVD (including porn) that gave my other players problems with NO problem at all.

The Sony DOES have a cool resume feature inthat it will resume a DVD even after the DVD has been removed and even another DVD has been played. That's really cool...

Good luck.....

Peace.....

You might consider the Pansonic DVD-XP50 which is a step above the XP30 in price, but with good reason.

It has the same chipset and deinterlacing properties the much revered RP-82 has, with IMO a better looking case.

The only downside to the player is that it has no coaxial output, which may or may not be important to you and/or your parents Cap42086.

Not a problem.

So I guess I'll look more heavily into the Pioneer and also into the other Panasonic suggested.

Anything else?

i vote for Pioneer just because i own one and it has been a very reliable player, and tend to agree with Tom about their players (the right ones)

The only thing that's preventing me from checking out Pioneer players is the chroma bug. How bad is it?

The Pioneer DV-656a DOES (apparently) have the chroma bug but I have either A) not seen it at all (most likely) or b) have seen it and didn't know it.

The chroma bug will NOT be as "blatant" as pixelation or anything and I highly doubt your parents would even notice it, unless they know what to look for or have VERY sensitive eyes to that kind of thing.

The biggest question is: what is the most important, reliability or video performance?

The DV-656a is NO video "slouch" at all, even though the RP82 uses better video components for progressive video output.

I have given several Pioneer DVD players as gifts to people and NOT ONE of them has complained about the video performance. My office mate bought a DV-440, at my recommendation, and while people posted in the "Glitch Exhaust" about having problems with recently released DVDs, he has experienced not ONE problem with any of those "problematic" DVDs that he's watched. Monster's Inc played just fine and didn't exhibit the "hang" after the layer change that has caused several players grief.

Of course, my recommendation for the Pioneer is purely a recommendation and I think either the Pioneer or the Panasonic will be just fine for your parents.

I tend to recommend Pioneer players since they're the least problematic DVD players I've had personal experience with.

Peace.....

Video performance.

I tried looking around for the RP-82, but since they're nto making them anymore, I guess people are buying them left and right, so no such luck there. But if I can find it, I will go with that one instead 100%.

But hey, if I can't, then the Pioneer will do fine.

Ok, the the Panasonics are VERY hard to beat, at this price point. They use the Sage chipset for de-interlacing and the RP82 and maybe the RP62 use DCDi to help de-interlace video-sourced material VERY well. No chroma bug. There really isn't a "good" competitor, at this price point. Some prefer the picture of Toshiba players (like the SD-4800) over the RP82, at this price point, but the SD-4800 has the chroma bug.

My local Video Only might have some RP82s in stock. I can help you get one of those if you can't find any online.

What kind of display will the player be connected to? If we're talking interlaced video ONLY, then the de-interlacing ability of the Panasonic's is NOT applicable.... at least until a display that can handle a progressive video input is used...

Peace.....

Thanks anyway, but I got them something that they'll appreciate even more: Bruce Springstien tickets. Not necessarily my cup of tea, but my dad has sat through Weezer and STP with my brother and I, so it's the least I can do for him.

As far as the new player, I'll probably wait until after summer for my dad's birthday to get him one. And the Panasonics will probably improve by then, so I'll just wait it out.

Sounds like a plan to me...

As for the chroma bug concern you expressed, check out my post in this thread dated today (01/07/2003):
