Help! DVD's will not play

I have a Toshiba SD2300 player and any DVD I try to play will not load up and I get DISC ERROR message. It started a little while ago, and only would happen with certain DVD's, but if you open/closed the tray a couple times the DVD would finally play. Now it happens with just about every DVD and even with starting and stopping the player 5 - 10 times the disc won't load. A friend here at work said that he heard the lens can get dirty and you need to clean them. Does this sound right, and whats the best way to do it?

I have a Toshiba SD-1600 and mine does the same thing sometimes.

To get it to play take the lid off of the player hit the eject button and when the tray comes out take your finger and roll the lens gear (don'y touch the lens itself) all the way back and hit close and the movie should load. Most of the time I only have to do this once and it's good for a couple of movies and sometimes you will have to do it more than once but this usually gets the movie to load.

If anyone knows whats causing this please fill us in. I can't afford a new player right now so I'm making due with what I have.

I had a similar problem with my Toshiba 6-Disc player (SD4109X) I had bought 2 years or so ago. (Luckily I got it with the 4-year warranty at Best Buy).

It was doing the same thing where discs that played on it, started acting like they wouldn't load and it was random. I could switch to a different movie, and it would play, and then I could switch right back to the other movie, and it would play it. It sounded like it was trying to read the discs, where I would hear a motor winding up and winding back down over and over again.

I took it in, and they told me it just needed cleaning, but of course, this didn't help. I convinced them to actually work on the player, and I got it back a couple of weeks later, saying that they had to replace the optic center or something. If I didn't have the warranty (which made this free), it would have cost (parts & labour) about $300+.

It worked fine again for about a week, and then started doing the same thing again. I took it back in. Same problem fixed. Worked fine for another month.

Then it started acting up again. They have the warranty which says that if they can't fix a problem after 3 attempts, I get an exchange for a comparable player in the store.

I took it back in for the 3rd try, and I got a call, saying they'll just exchange it rather than fix it. Because at this point, something else broke (probably because they kept fixing the part that was breaking, rather than finding what was breaking that part, and now it busted something else) and would cost them about $600 to fix it (and the player was only $500 new).

I exchanged it for the new Toshiba 5-Disc player (SD2815) that's been on the market for only a couple of months at this point, and I love it. It has more features and is better than the 6-Disc player was.

Best warranty I ever bought (although I did buy a new 4-year warranty on the new one).

The ironic thing is that my old single-disc Toshiba player (SD2006) that I bought in 1997 still works fine.

Moved to Hardware since this a problem with the DVD player itself.

Lizard, I would not mess with cleaning it and just replace the player, if you can afford to do so.

Peace.....
