16X9 HDTV:Aspect ratio help please

Hi,
I just bought my Hitachi 44" HDTV widescreen. I noticed in the manual it urged that you always zoom an image in until it fills the screen. I have noticed that films in 1:85:1 will fill the entire screen in normal 16x9 mode, but most others, like 2:35:1(specifically Trek movies and Triple X) will not. They have a small bit of "black bars" at the bottom. I hate to watch these movies in 16x9 zoom and lose some picture just to have it fill the entire screen. Will the "
black bars" really hurt the TV? Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me out with this!

I don't think you have to worry. I have a 4:3 Hitachi 53" HDTV That has 16:9 mode and have watched lots of 2.35:1 movies and can't see a problem.

Without a doubt if all you ever watched was 2.35:1 stuff the lines would burn in because you are only using the middle of the screen so those areas (black bars) may seam a little brighter in a couple years. If you keep the contrast down to a reasonable level you should be fine.

It just says things like that in the manual so that if you are the 1 in a million that this happens to and try and sue the company for it, they say "READ THE MANUAL DUMBASS!"

It is really just there to cover there own ass form all possible situations. Even if screen burn happens to only 1 of the TVs they have made, that one line of text saves them from a law suit.

Hi all! I was concerned about the smae thing as this thread and this was all I could find. Is this true...that it is just not that big of a deal. Keeping contrast to a reasonable level...what is reasonable...I never plan to play video games on this set nor do I plan to use the 4:3 aspect which gives you gray bars down the sides. But I have a giant collection of letterboxed DVDs...what should I look out for?

Thank you all!

Use a calibration disc like Avia, Video Essentials, or Sound and Vision to set the proper levels for your TV.
