multi-region stuff

The Friday the 13th news got me thinking, so I took a trip over to ebay in search of a multi-region player and there are people selling codes for $2.50 to 'update' any player into a multi-region player. What I'd like to know is if this is true? If there is actually a code I could just plug into the player someway.

TIA

I'm not sure what kind of codes you mean but normally these are put in via the remote using a special sequence and these can easily be found for nothing by just doing a quick search... if your looking for a cheap multi-region player then head over to Best Buy and pick up a Cyberhome 500 ($69 with a $20 rebate last time I looked)... it's multi-region after the remote hack, progressive scan and does a marvellous job of doing the PAL->NTSC conversion. I've had this player for a few weeks now and have no complaints.

cyber home 500 or 402?

Checking Bestbuy.com i cant find the cyberhome 500, but i see the 402 which offers PAL and NTSC, but doesnt have progressive scan. It's $69.99 too, so im wondering if it IS the same one?

Check out here for news as to it's availability - Link.

My local BB (PA) and also Radio Shack had a ton of 500's right before Xmas... A few posts on the above link were saying that BB were just sold out of the 500 and were expecting another delivery soon. I'm not 10o% sure but I think that the 402 doesn't do as good a job of the PAL conversion as the 500. A lot of the other cheap players (Apex for example) have problems converting PAL anamorphic widescreen discs in the correct ratio on a 4:3 tv set - they just stretch the picture out... the 500 does not do this and that is why I jumped straight on it.

This is the region-free code for the 500 -

1. Turn on the player
2. open the tray
3. press the stop button on your remote
4. enter 1-9-9-9 using the remote
5. select the region code using the remote (set it to ALL)
6. confirm it, using enter
7. leave the menu using the return button on your remote
8. close the tray

1.) open cd tray
2.) press the following keys to change the region code:
'Setup'
'1'
'3'
'6'
'9'
followed by pressing 'left' 3 times and 'right' 1 time
3.) choose the new menu point 'version'
4.) change the 'region code' to 0

I just got mine today...haven't messed with it though I just got home from the Penguins/Rangers game.

All they are going is selling instructions on how to enter a remote control hack to make the player multiregion, these instructions are freely avaiable on the web, they are just trying to prefit from people that don't know this.

http://www.dvd.reviewer.co.uk/info/multiregion/ have almost 300 mutliregion hack instructions listed for free.
