Possible DVD player Problem HELP

I have a question that I hope someone here can help with.

I'm a student and for the past while have always watched my dvds on my computer. No problems.

I've been back home the last couple of weeks where my parents very recently bought a fairly high end (or at least decent as far as I can tell) JVC DVD player.

Anyway since then I've bought two DVDs.

the first I bought last weekend and it's the anime His and Her Circumstances vol 1. I had heard there were some problems with this dvd in terms of showing the subtitles on certain episodes on certain systems but that was the only trouble I hear.d But while watching it episodes 5 and 6 were virtually unwatchable on my system--fromt he start of launchign either episode after a few seconds the dvd would freeze static and the counter would go forward a few more seconds then jump back to the time it froze ad infinitum. I'd fast forward a bit only to have the prob happen straight away again, etc etc.

I was sure this was a scratched disc or some malfunction tho' I haven't had time to return it yet. I did check the dvd for any scratches I could notice with absolutely no luck.

Then today I bought Buffy Season three. While scanning thru the episodes on disc one I loaded episode four on and immediately the exact smae problem occured, and again ti seems to go on no matter how far I fast forward.

I haven't checked the other discs yet.

these does seem liek a bit too much of a coincidence tho'. Could the problem be with my partents player? Is it fixable? I really am a DVD novice so any advice/info, even themost basic, would be extremely appreciated.

Thanks
Eric

Ok, please post the model number of your JVC and we can possibly provide more accurate info...

Peace....

Sounds like a problem with the player. If they can exchange it (since you say they just bought it) they probably should.

if not, I would recomend using a disc cleaning kit.

Thanks for the advice SeaMonkey. It's too new to really need cleaning...

Hoqwever the places the disc freezes all seem to be the same spots--tho again there seem to be no scractches (and show be none). Could this still be a DVD player prob?

I've had scratch-free discs go bad, so a clean surface doesn't mean anything.

Disc freezes at the same spot seem to indicate that it is the discs that are flawed. However, having multiple discs exhibiting the same problem indicate that it's the player that is faulty.

Do you have access to another player that you can test these discs on? If the same problems persist on 2 different players, the disc is bad.

Also, if you have any older DVDs that are glitchfree for sure, test them on the JVC to see if they play glitchfree.

Unfortunately, playing new discs on a new player makes it almost impossible to figure out what is wrong. You need to have something to use as a test comparison, either another DVD player or older DVDs in your collection that you know are glitchfree.

Thanks a lot for your help.

I tried it in my brother's basic DVD-ROM and it plays no probs. Would there be any major reason why it would go without a glitch in the rom and screw up on the JVC?

Not really. Standalone players tend to be more glitchfree than DVD-ROM drives, but that's more a general trend of all players than in specific cases.

I had a JVC briefly for a couple of days when I was searching for a new player 6 months ago. It seemed pretty good with superior error-correction abilities, but it somehow blocked out closed-captions signals to the TV. I ended up returning it.

Other than that, it seems that your parents were just unlucky to pick a glitching player. If your parents bought the player within the last month, I'd recommend that they return it. They could get another player of the same model or try another brand altogether.
