TV question

First off, I don't have a budget big enough for a widescreen tv right now.

should I get a flat screen tv? Does it improve the picture a lot to justify getting it.

The thing that flat screens are good for is reducing glare from inside light sources. Are you looking at an HD flat screen? If so, you may want to consider the 30" WS Samsung that can be had for about the same price as a Sony 32" 4X3 analog set. Knowing more about your budget, or what you have looked at so far, will be a big help

Well, I was thinking that I might go HD as well. I am thinking of spending about 300-500 dollars. I need it to be 27 inches too, to fit in my entertainment center.

Brian just got a 27" samsung HD ready set, ask him how he likes it. Unfortunately, the Samsung retails for about 650. If you can come up with the extra scratch, go for it. If you can get a flat TV, like I said above, the differences will be apparent, but not overwelmingly so. You may want to just get a good TV for now and upgrade when fundage allows it.

Cool, we do need a new tv something bad, it's has a siezure whenever there is a lot of white on the screen. and we get ghost images on tv, but not with dvds. though you can see a loss of quality.

thanks for all your advice chnglr1970

If I may suggest...if you don't have a progressive scan DVD player and/or HDTV is not in your near future, just go for a decent analog set. Also, IMHO, 27" is just too small of a screen to really get full enjoyment of progressive/HD, considering the extra cost over analog sets of the same size. Save up for your big screen :D
As far as analog sets go (flat or otherwise), I've always liked JVC over the other three big Japanese brands (Toshiba, Panasonic, Sony). Either of thier 27" flatscreen models (silver or black) can be had for under $500 (MSRP $550).

My advice: Take the $500 put it in the bank deal with your current TV keep saving money let the price of plasma displays drop and buy one in a year or so. If I were you waiting a year wouldn't be bad considering I really don't think you will gain to much with the flat display. Im not a big fan of HDTV on a smaller standard display anyway. Then again you know what opinions are like. I think I can tell that you really want the bigger widescreen and I think you know you do to so don't try and pacify your want with something that still doesn't compare. IMHO
