DVD rom question

i have a Creative Labs 5x DVD rom that came with a decoder card but when ever i play any DVDs that have Rom content that require Interactual Player 2.0 i get a message saying it cant detect the decoder card, older PC Friendly stuff works fine. Id like to get a new video card (current card is a 8mb PCI card with Svhs and composite video outs) that has DVD playback i have PowerDVD XP 4.0 as my player works better than the software that came with the dvd rom. so basically i wanna know if i get a video card preferably a ATI card can i just remove the decoder card and use the DVDrom drive and use the software that comes with the video card or the PowerDVD player. I cant seem to get any info from Creative Labs and there is no Phone # for ATI. any help would be MOST appriciated

Yes.

Short, sweet, and to the point

I use the Radion 7500 for my HTPC, and am planning on upgrading to the 9500 Pro hopefully in June. I may wait till August for that one.

You may want to upgrade the ROM as well. You should be able to get a 16X DVDROM for less than 50 bucks. I bet you would see an improvement in pperformance with that as well.

I second upgrading the drive. 5X is SLOW.
The video card will definitely help you out. All newer cards (even my old GF2MX does it) have DVD-ROM support, and really help out performance greatly.

Let me just point out that that 5x drive is more than likely region free - an issue that wasn't resolved until 6x drives (and faster) were released. Also, that 5x is still faster than drives found in most desktop DVD players.

But if the multi-region thing isn't an issue, it's worth upgrading...

If you have room in your case, you can always add a new DVD-ROM drive and keep the old one.
