Does anyone know anything about Sampo?

I looked on the internet and cant really find any reviews. We've decided that watching movies on my 27in 4:3 vega wont cut it anymore, so I want something thats 16:9 and at least 42in. We looked at RPTVs but when you can get plasma for less than a grand more it seems very appealing. HDTV isnt terribly important, we primarily want it for DVDs, and occasional TV programs so the 960 EDTV is fine. We looked at a couple of Samsungs, (one at Best Buy for 2800 and one at tweeter for 3300) but Best Buy has this Sampo unit aswell, its also 2800, but we found it at a local store for 2300. thats only about 800 more than the RPTVs we were looking at. The picture on the Sampo at best buy looks terrible, but most of the HDTVs there look terrible. I know someone here asked about a sampo CRT set a while ago, but they seem to be a little more main stream now. Any Ideas? or other suggestions?

Can't say anything about Sampo but my suggestion would be that you're more likely better off with with of the popular branded RPTVs instead of plasma...unless space is really a concern. I think picture quality is better on a good RPTV than in any of those plasmas.
good luck.

A friend of mine used to own a Sampo DVD player, and remarked how cheaply made and finnicky they were. He got it for the Macrovision hack and the all-region capability, but was disapointed with the PAL conversion and ended up with a Malata. Apparently their tech support is not very good and their equipment is generally lackluster. Not the kind of company I'd want to put plasma money into.

Get the RPTV, and a GOOD Progressive scan DVD player, and spend the rest on DVDs...

what would you consider a GOOD progresive player? Im guessing not the $150 Sony...

Size isnt the main issue (although it is a consideration), the big issue is that we are moving to Philly in the not too distant future, and than after school we'll be moving again, back to NYC, and we may move severale times in between. So the ease of moving is a big plus, although not a big enough issue to rule out an RPTV all together.

Does anyone know how well RPTVs travel? I know that an ISF calabtation can do wonders, and I dont want to drop one third of the TVs value into a calabration that will be rendered useless, by josseling the set into and out of a moving van.
