HTPC Questions

I know some of the people here have HTPCs, but I was wondering a few things:

What are the advantages over having normal separate components?

Where do I get one (which companies produce the best ones at fair prices)?

Do you use this as your main computer?

Do macs make good HTPCs?

Just quite curious about this because I am looking for a new computer.

While I'm not saying there aren't any companies that make HTPC's, I'm pretty sure the majority of the people who have an HTPC, also assembled it themsevles by buying the parts seperate. This would pretty much exclude a Mac as an HTPC if you went this route.

I'll soon be using my PC i built as an HTPC -- as soon as i get my component video adapter. For me -- I'm just using this to tide me over until I get a progressive scan player. It will still be used as my main PC. I'll let some of our HTPC experts address you other questions, or elaborate more than i have

They're a bit of an ugly, noisey and expensive solution to play DVDs IMHO.

Try and correct me if I'm wrong

They don't necessairly have to be that noisy (and some DVD players are noisy too) but they're one of the best ways to view a DVD and anything else that comes close is often more expensive anyway.

Plus, you can do other things with them then than watch DVDs.

I wont touch noisy and expensive, although I disagree with both, but I definatly think that they are not ugly. Now this is entirly and opinion thing, but check out this setup, I think the HTPC really adds an ellement to the whole deal.

What's that supposed to mean?

My Mini-itx based HTPC doen't make any noise at all and it produces a better picture than any of my stand alone DVD players.

I've seen people build these systems into "standard" DVD players too, so it's not any more "ugly" than any other home theater component.
