Resolution Question

Hi,

I am trying to transfer some old laserdisc and VHS material to DVD. I bought this DAZZLE thing at Circuit City. It seems to work OK, but I am not sure about the resolution. When I play the laserdisc out via S-video into my computer, the DAZZLE software shows the resolution as 352x240... Is that correct? I thought the resoltion should be higher, but then again, I am kinda new to this. If anyone could tell me if this is right, I would appreciate it.. Also, the DAZZLE thing I got plugs into my PC via USB and it has connectios for L/R audio, RCA video and S-Video. Is there a really good software package out there that I could get instead of what came with this thing but that would work with it?? Just curious. I really want to back up some of my old stuff I have taped in years gone by...

I would greatly appreciate any information.

Thanks so much,

Zack

352x240...yes, that is a relatively low resolution but I'm afraid that's what you're limited to. Why? because that Dazzle is transfering via USB and that interface just does not have the bandwidth to transfer high quality video. If you can live with that, fine, but if you're willing to spend more, go and buy the PCI or Firewire version (assuming you have available PCI slot or firewire capability, respectively).
good luck

Cool. Thanks for the info...

What kind of resolution could I reasonably expect from firewire?

I appreciate the help!

Zack

sorry, I must correct myself...
looking at Dazzle's Product Page, there are indeed USB (1.1) products that are able to capture at higher resolutions. I'm assuming though that you have one of the lower models. Have a look for yourself and maybe you can pick up the product more suitable to your needs (if your budget permits, of course).

Not that I know much about either, but I thought Firewire was similar in bitrate and speed to USB?

Firewire speed is similar to USB 2.0 speed, up to 480Mbps and 400Mbps, respectively. Considerably faster than USB 1.x at 12Mbps.

Yah. I may have to see if I can return the one I got... I just got it the other day and I do still have the receipt.
