Yamaha 5540/50/60 vs 5640 vs ???

...it's time that i start digging for a new receiver. i came across the 5540 in an ad, and that brought some interest. but i haven't been able to find prices for the 5550 or 5560 (in CAD).

while at the best buy USA site, i came across the 5640 which fit my needs even more so... however, i can't find any info on it at yamaha, crutchfield, etc. so, is this a new model?

i'm looking for a 6.1 receiver... with inputs for CD/MD/CS/Phono/AUX [for computer, in and out]. although, the cassette deck is not necessary... recommendations for other brands?

thanks. all help is appretiated.

The 56XX series of Yamaha is new this year. All of the 56XX series receivers have 6.1. Another suggestion I would have is the Pioneer VSX-D812, or the 912K depending on your budget. That is going to be the biggest factor in a recomendation.

56XX -- that's what i thought... the fact that they also have the phono inputs is key... i think i will wait til they show up in shop. but what are the differences between the Pioneer 812 and 912, i can't find any info on the 912...

thanks for the help

The Pioneer receivers should also have a phono input as my Pioneer Elite VSX-24TX does.

Peace...

What is your price range for a new receiver?

I bought in December a Marantz SR4300 with everything that you are asking for $690 in total Canadian at Hi-Fi Farview here down the QEW in Burlington. Great store and might be willing to give you a deal too.

PM me if you need directions and stuff.

right now, i'm pretty open... under $700 sounds good... i don't want to have to upgrade again if i don't have to, so i don't mind putting in a few more bucks now...

i'll check the marantz site in a bit as well, thanks...

From the Pioneer Website:

VSX-D912K:
  • 110 watts x 6 channels
  • Auto MCACC (Multi-channel Acoustic Calibration) provides a microphone that listens to each of your speakers and automatically adjusts them for distance and sound level
  • 7.1 Channel Inputs
  • 5 Digital Inputs (2 optical/2 coaxial back, 1 optical front) / 1 Digital Out (optical)

Sorry, no phono input.

From the Denon website
Quote:
Dolby Digital Surround EX, Dolby Pro Logic II & DTS ES Discrete 7.1 A/V Receiver • Dolby Digital Surround EX, Pro Logic II • DTS Extended Surround Discrete 6.1 decoding • DTS Extended Surround Matrix 6.1 decoding • DTS Neo:6 Cinema & Music Surround decoding • DTS ES 96/24 5.1 decoding for DVD Video • Analog Devices Melody 100, 32 bit floating point DSP processor • 7 Channels • 90 watts per channel (8 ohms, 20 Hz-20 kHz, <.05%THD) • 125 watts per channel (6 ohms, 1 kHz, <.7%THD) • 16 Analog Devices 24 bit, 96 kHz high resolution DACs on all eight channels, in differential configuration • Adjustable High and Low Pass Crossover (40/60/80/100/120Hz) • 2 Assignable component video inputs (100MHz) • 7 sets composite and "S" video inputs • 7.1 external wide bandwidth (100 kHz) analog inputs • 5/7 Channel Stereo • Personal Memory Plus • 6 assignable digital inputs (4 Optical, 2 Coaxial) • 2 Optical digital outputs • 9 analog inputs including built-in AM/FM tuner • Multi-Zone 1 stereo pre-amp level audio outputs • Power Amplifier Assign function, lets you assign 2 of the 7 amp channels to drive second zone speakers directly • Pre-programmed/learning Glow Key remote • Serial Port for Third Party RS-232 Control Systems • Remote I/O ports • Assignable +12v trigger • SRP $799
It's a little pricy, but Denon makes good stuf.

On the Marantz website, I was looking at the backs of the receivers, and found no Phono input. I did notice however that the remote for the SR7300 looked a LOT like the Pioneer

Finding a phono input on a HT receiver may be a challange. You may want to consider getting a phono pre-amp and using a wider selection of receivers.

hope this helps
