Yamaha / Technics -- Receivers and Turntables

plenty of dumb questions, but i just wanna make sure i've setup my system proper...

i posted the other day asking about the HTR series receivers, but i ended up getting the Yamaha RX-V630 instead. now, i've gotta ask what is the difference between the RX and the HTR series receivers?

i'm an idiot for not checking myself, but the 630 doesn't have phono inputs... do i need a pre-amp now, or will i be alright hooking up my turntable to the receiver without one [using one of the auxillary ports]? i've got a Technics SL-BD20, and i'm not sure if there's a pre-amp in it.

i need to use a digital cable from my DVD player to receiver in order for the receiver to detect the format, correct? ...i can't use standard RCA cables, right?

currently i have my subwoofer from the main L/R channels of the receiver, then from the sub, out to the main speakers -- should i switch to a subwoofer cable or is it alright as it is?

i'm sure i'll come up with some other questions...
thanks to anyone that can help in advance.

bye

If by phono input you mean Phono Stage, then you can bet that you will need a Pre-Amp for Turntables. Just ask for a Phono Stage at an Electronics store - they are quite cheap.

You can use RCA cables from the DVD player to the reciever so long as the DVD player has a Built In Decoder. But there is no point because your receiver has DTS, Dolby Digital EX, DTS ES decoders built in (I'm jealous now).

As for the subwoofer one, I would say leave it as it is. If you are passing the signals through the sub, then it will filter out the low-end it uses and sends the rest to the speakers. You just need to set the front speakers on the receiver to "Large".

...thanks Octopus. i'm a little pissed that i didn't really make sure it had the phono inputs, otherwise i woulda dropped the extra cash for the 730. [as far as i can tell, it just adds the phono input and on-screen display]. otherwise, i love this unit. DD/DTS ES/EX 6.1 yum!

my DVD player doesn't have a decoder. right now i'm using a Sony optical cable... it came with something -- DVD? MD?

Running your sub through the speaker level outputs will not allow you to use the .1 feature in the 5.1 setup. That is, unless you have alll your speakers set to small, your mains set to large, and the sub set to no. The .1 in the 5.1 setup uses the sub pre-out for the LFE. I would get a sub cable and use that myself...

thanks chlngr... i was planning on re-doing some cables this weekend anyway, so i'll grab one of those as well.

update: the 630 will go back on the weekend... yesterday i was looking over the phono stage and that was gonna be $150... so goodbye 630, hello 730. $100 more, and the math is much nicer.

hope you enjoy your new toy I am hoping to get a new receiver this summer to replace my aging DD only Denon. I'm planning on giving that to my parents when they build their house here in WA.

honestly, i love it... it's breathing life into old discs again... going from a dolby surround to a full DD / DTS setup... lovely. i'll give an update over the weekend about the changes again... eventually get some pictures for the 'your home theatre' section too

i'm back. i think i literally spent the day re-doing the setup -- new cables, new interconnects, and -- new receiver. Yamaha RX-V730. when i went in to return the receiver, the same sales person was there, and i think he was a bit hesitant about the return until i said i wanted to UPgrade. he knocked off a few more bucks, and i basically the 730 for the regular price of the 630. VERY pleased.

i'm impressed with the remote... every remote needs an LCD display. setting up the other components was much easier... and the on-screen display -- i love it. however, i didn't buy another set of component cables [yet? another $110 on em isn't priority] -- so i have it in a seperate input on the tele.

there's plenty of other discs i need to skim through, but otherwise, i'm VERY pleased... i'll try getting pictures soon.
