Interesting. I think the Basic service will just hook people on to the full one. Once you Tivo, you can never go back. Normal TV viewing sucks.

Personal DVD Recorders?

TiVo, makers of the most popular personal digital recorder, said Thursday that it will license the basic version of its service to all DVD manufacturers. The company announced in January that it had licensed its technology to Toshiba, which plans to introduce a combination DVD recorder/player/TiVo controller during the second half of this year. The unit will allow consumers to watch television programs stored on the TiVo hard drive or to "burn" them onto a DVD disc.

so this is basically what Panasonic already has out, just with the Tivo license...the Panasonic is not selling well in this country (the DMR-E90 is not being released here because of that), so I assume the Tivo name will get consumers to jump on this...I hope it works out, sounds like a great idea. Another nail in the coffin for VHS.

Well, with the basic service, it might be a little rbetter than what the Panasonic is. But with the full service, there's nothing like a Tivo.

Although I'm curious about the recoding to DVD aspect as I've gotten the impression that Tivo will stear clear of alienating the networks and studios (they're partnered with some of the networks) and that sounds like something they'd choke over.

Did I read that article wrong or did it say that the first device with this technology will be just a DVD player combined with a Tivo? Wouldn't it be much cheaper to just buy a stand-alone Tivo? I can see the point if it's combined with a DVD recorder, but not just a player.

As far as alienating the networks go, it's all a matter of money. If the nets can get money out of it, they'll be fine with it.

Mur...

Think of the masses that see it as a all in one solution, like the DVD/VCR. Lets see how this panns out. I may be interested in it if it does have a DVD-R built in...

Good point, chlngr1970. Damn masses.

What we need in a few years is a combination Tivo with HD capabilities and a HD-DVD recorder. Then we'll all be happy.
