Try unplugging it for a while.

By any chance, did you try setting it on progressive scan, when you shouldn't have?

That sounds like a good plan

Did you possibly change the way of outputting the signal -- not sure if the Malata has that but my Cyberhome lets you output in either component or composite, or possibly even PAL or NTSC. Cyberhome have a fix that resets the player to defaults through the remote control -- check whether Malata has that ability?

EDIT

I found the below but it is for the Malata N996 -- perhaps it will work for you

TO RESET THIS MACHINE TO FACTORY DEFAULT SETTINGS PLEASE DO THE FOLLOWING

Press Clear and hold till machine powers down, Press clear again, press pro , press clear, press play. Machine will be setup to factory defaults

i don't think it's the pal/ntsc because there is a button on that on the remote control maybe it's the composite/component thing. but i will definately try to reset the machine through the controller. i was trying to flip through the menus blindly through the menus in the instruction manual to try and reset it to no avail i'll definatly try to use the method you posted. thanks so much. i'll post back to let you know if it worked.
