Need Some Help

Hey, I just got a Panasonic HDTV and I am having problems trying to hook it up to the reciever. I have a Sony HT-DDW830 home theatre system, and I am trying to get the DVD audio to run through the Reciever, but since the reciever has no S-Video jacks, I connected the S-Video cable from the dvd player to the TV and the audio cables from the dvd player straight to the reciever. I am having trouble getting the sound to come thru. Any thoughts on what I did wrong?

Now I only get sound from the front left speaker and the subwoofer, but the other four are fucked up. Anyone know what I can do?

Hi! Ok, connecting the DVD player's video directly to the TV and the audio directly to the receiver is fairly standard practice. This is how I have my system configured, mostly (my system is a tiny bit more complicated than yours... )

Anywho, first, can you get video on the TV when playing a DVD? If so, we're safe on the video side.

Second, what kinds of audio cables are you using to connect to the receiver? Are you trying a digital audio connection or an analog (RCA jacks) audio connection? What make/model of DVD player are you using?

If making a digital audio connection, are you trying and optical digital audio connection or a coax digital audio connection?

Once we have this info, we can help you get your audio connections worked out.

Also, is it possible to take a picture of what the back of your receiver looks like with all of the cables connected? If so, we might be able to help you get this resolved faster.

Lastly, if you think you have everything connected properly, you must make sure you are selecting the correct audio input on the receiver so the sound will come out. Make sure your receiver's audio input is selected to the input you have the DVD player's audio cables connected to. This should be an input selection either on the front of the receiver or on through the receiver's remote.

Peace...

The video connection worked fine, because I am playing a dvd right now and the picture comes thru perfectly. However, my audio connections are all analog (RCA cables), but I think I did them all right, only now I am trying to figure out how to set the system so all my speakers work, and not just the front left one. I can't take a picture because I don't have a digital camera (sorry about that), but I am still playing around with this reciever to see what I can do. The DVD player is a Pioneer DV-333, or something like that (fairly old and from what I am told, although I don't agree with it, its fairly shitty). Any info is appreciated. THanks for your response.

Ok, if you're using the analog audio connections, you will only get stereo sound. Check your speaker connections and make sure all of the speakers are connected properly.

If you want full 5.1 audio, you will need to use a digital audio cable. The DV-333 supports both optical digital audio cables and coax digital audio cables. Look on the back of your receiver (along with the manual for it) and see if you have any free coax or optical (or toslink it's also called) inputs. If you have one or the other free, then that will dictate the kind of digital audio cable you will need to get.

Peace...

Hey tomdkat, you really know your stuff buddy! Yeah, I think you are right. My reciever can get both types of digital cables, but I am not sure which one to get. You said either type is fine? This shall allow me to get digital 5.1 sound? Will it also work if I choose DTS sound on my DVD player (the reciever has a DTS decoder so that is why I was anxious to hook it up to the dvd player)? I appreciate your time and wisdom!!!
